***JULY HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

Ooooh don't encourage me... doesn't help the shell has this gaping hole I can see inside and it is DARK which tells me the chick isn't even on it.

Damn it now I'm VERY tempted because the membrane IS in fact WHITE on at least one of these eggs who have been going at it a while

Yes it can take 24 hours plus to hatch.

However, if the peeping is getting weaker, get in there and help them. If they're just sitting there peeping loudly... let 'em sit for a little longer. Mine make a big hole and then start zipping, so the large hole doesn't concern me much- the change in volume or strength does.

If you don't see other pips, you can take the chicks out. If you see other pips, leave the first ones in there unless they start losing strength or they are playing kickball with the eggs trying to hatch. Mist the inside of the incubator as you open it to keep the humidity going.

And sorry I wasn't around to hop into the conversation earlier----- I had to go to the post office to pick up my shipped silkie eggs after breaking out my peacock eggs from their packing material *dance* Waiting on the BCM and golden lakenvelders now!

Grats on the new peep, Sport! And everyone else hatching.

Well the thing that concerns me is I only hear 2 or three chirping... this is out of 14 eggs that had made it to lock down - 5 of which are pipped. This open one has been quiet as has the one above it. the peeps seem to be coming from the ones more along the bottom left while the two are both top center.

Okay. I'm on it. I can sit on my hands but i think these qualify as a humidity issue especially when the first one had pipped when i opened my bator - i could have thrown it off then

I went to the room to give her some water she was moving something to the front its a baby chick out of its shell chirping but has a yellow thing attached to its bottom looks like yolk . Should I be worried? She has pulled it under her wing and it peeps.

Intervened and her membrane was definitely VERY dry. I don't get that. The humidity in there is something like 85% and such.. well, she peeped at me. Seems to have perked her up at least.. I hope.. threw a warm soaked washrag in the bator.

Is it possible I have a malfunctioning incubator that's just flat out not holding humidity? All of my failed hatches have been dried out. I actually tested my hygrometers this time and they were accurate.

Half an hour longer and I'm going in again.

I SEE BEAK. She seems to be trying it looks like its open around the membrane.

@ Stormy: The if the yellow is stark/dark yellow, it's possibly yolk. If it was a dirty yellow with any other colors, it's fine. That's probably just the waste sack they sometimes have when they hatch. Mine usually leave it in the egg, but sometimes they take it with them for reasons unknown.

@ Rin: If the chick was close to the opening of the bator, it may have dried out- it won't become damp again without contact with water, as opposed to just general humidity in the air. The membrane will always be 'dry' unless your humidity was terribly high through the incubation, then it will become wet and gummy. You may try taking a look at the eggtopsy thread (https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=363717&p=1) and take a look at the picture of what a shrink wrapped membrane looks like to make sure your dry is abnormal, making it a threat. If the membrane is just dry to the touch, it may actually be normal. If you have a picture, I could probably tell you.

I had to go move her wing so I could get a better look its yellow color and under has looks like a blood vessel going over it but it has shrunk a lot now looks like its disappearing.

Then it's probably the yolk, the chick may have hatched a little bit before it was ready to... if you leave it alone, it will most likely absorb the rest and you won't see it by the time they get up to walk around! Since it's getting littler, I would not worry too much. Grats on the chick!

Actually. Now that I have their zip done for them. I realize their beak. Is in fact. Upside down. I think they got too big and couldn't MOVE to zip. I mean I could see their beak. They clicked it at me as I carefully clipped away shell and they were "Biting" at air and seemed unable to actually MOVE. What do I do?

Couldn't get a picture. The fog was just too much for my cam. It's peeping but not really even... moving...
