July Hatch-a-Long (including 4th of July hatch-a-long)

Well, only 1 of the ten made it to lockdown 3 days ago. And it hatched. I'm truly surprised that any developed and hatched as my friend saved these eggs for me so not sure if they got a little too warm or old before I got ahold of them. Can't say much as he tries his hardest and is learning as he goes. He was a complete city boy until I dropped off chickens to his place 2 years ago when he mentioned he would like some.

Their head freaks me out I want this color though!

My daughter is my partner in poultry projects, and she has a business selling keets and hatching eggs so she does a lot. She is always going on about how she finds the keets so cute and the adults so ugly, mostly due to their bare head and casque! I actually find them lovely!

I think you'd get to like their heads... probably a project for later, with more land though. They're quite the travelers and super noisy.

We have 10 acres and it’s really a little too small for them. I keep telling my hubby (who dislikes guinea fowl) that we need 40 acres for the guineas... He is not amused!

I would go for more acreage/outbuildings before more house. We have 12 and I think maybe (for us) between 40 & 50 with the bulk in pasture/meadow would accommodate most of our desired projects. Everything around us is USFS though and we love it here, so we'll take the limitations. You are young. You will likely feel stymied on five acres.

One of our Welsummers decided to go broody three weeks ago. We couldn't keep track of how many eggs she was sitting on, so we just decided to roll with whatever.

We got our first chickie from that brood today.

And it looks like up to 11 additional siblings are on the way.
