July Hatch-a-long

I have 6 Pilgrim goslings due around the 12th and I just set 9 Mottled Java eggs due around the 17th! I am REALLY excited for the Javas!

First of all eggs that are being hatched should never be turned upside down, which is how you have these eggs. Always keep fat end UP! That is where the air cell is. And the light should be placed on top shining into the air cell. That is the only way you are going to see any veining. You move the light slowly around the edge of the air cell looking for the veining.

Thank you for your reply- I never read anything about not candling this way, I kept seeing alot of candling pics just like this so that is how I thought I was supposed to do it.

Never say a chick is dead because it is not moving. It may just be sleeping . I leave them all at the last moving or no. Good luck. I am still waiting for the real candling at day 10 on the 2nd of July to determine if mine is developing or not. I will not throw out any till then and with a lot of thought even then. They would have to be very clear. Or have a real blood circle. I was fooled once and I will not destroy a baby again.

I broke one open and the baby moved and I lost a really special egg once never again. I will wait it out. Experience is the best teacher she hurts.
these eggs are close to hatching and the non movement wasn't really what made me determine the chick dead. it was the lack of veining where there was veining the day before and the rest of the eggs still have veins. and when I opened the egg up sure enough..... the chick had died.

. I am sorry to hear about your special egg dieing. I did the same thing when I first started incubating and yea experience will teach ya. I learned real quick which ones are dead and which are not. I have lost a few that way. now the only time I will open the egg is if I am almost positive the chick died and even then I will only open the air cell enough for me to be able to see in. it has been a while since I have mistakenly opened a live one thank goodness.

I am SO bummed. The USPS lost my shippment of mixed rare breed eggs for 2 days. It shows up at the PO busted up and leaking.

I salvaged whati could and cleaned them up. I am not expecting a good hatch this time around.....

Sorry if it sounded ugly, didnt mean it to. But when I re-read it, it sounded bad. Eggs with the hard shell, most think are pretty tough, but they arent. The air cell needs to stay at the top so the chicks can hatch correctly. Turning them upside down can detach the air cell. This is what happens a lot to shipped eggs. Always candle through the air cell, fat end up, move the light around the eggs of the air cell to look for veining. Especially on dark eggs. White or lighter eggs are easier to see.

Well, I tried uploading some candling pictures, but all I got was a sign saying 'error uploading photos'. Anyway, I do have two with obvious veining, and one that may be a blood ring, or it may be some weird veining, I'm not sure yet. The ring is quite close to the air cell, and wavy, and it doesn't go all the way around the egg, so I'm hoping it is still alive and not a blood ring.

Some of my eggs are so porous, I'm going to wait until day 14 for sure to toss them, because even if they are developing, I'm not sure I'd be able to see it.
