July Hatch-a-long

Won't be able to cross with any Sussex blood til fall. Those will be from the red/sussex SL chicks I trying hatch now.

I was checking birds around midnight (Yes I keep bad hours anymore) and have 2 great looking BA roos, already getting the green sheen to them. So I am feeling great about my BA flock come fall and next spring. Only a little over 5 weeks but I think they look spectactular. ANd if my most recent BR's turn out tobe females I have 6 male barred SL I can use to breed back to good almost pure line. I am really happy with what I have accomlished so far this year. And don't see disapointing myself anytime soon.

I have 2 eggs set to hatch the 29th of this month then 3 more due the first! I candled them yesterday any they are alive and lively cant wait for them to hatch!

Well I've got some bad news guys, I went to check on my hen yesterday and 5 of her 7 eggs were broken, she had only been sitting for 4 days. Would a broody eat her eggs??? I can't figure out what could have happend she's been so protective of them. She's completely isolated nothing could have gotten her eggs. I'm so bummed. I cleaned her nest and cleaned her up and put her two eggs in her nest and she's been sitting on the two eggs that are left. Has anyone ever heard of this happening?

Oh no!! She might have crushed them. Is this the first time she has been broody?

Aw, I'm so sorry! I had a new broody crush one egg and one chick this last round. I think it happens mostly when they are new to brooding. 4 days in you might be able to sneak some more eggs under her. I added eggs 4 days in on my very first (broody) hatch because I broke one candling. She hatched eggs from both dates successfully.

"Unofficial" candle (my being nosy!) showed of the ones I can see into (darn BCMs) all but 2 have good veins already! So egg-cited! ;P Will do the official candle at 8 days to see for sure, and check on the ones without signs of fertility yet.

I am going to incubate eggs for the first time! I have twelve salmon faverolle eggs arriving on Tuesday of next week, and I am picking up twelve black copper marans eggs tomorrow evening. I'm hoping the BCM eggs will be okay while I wait for the SFs. If I can start them Tuesday, my hatch day should be July 16. How fun!
