July Hatch-a-long

My first hatch was terrible. I candled my second hatch today on day 8. Removed 4 eggs, and cracked them just to be sure that was the right thing to do. They all had no development. Maybe I'm getting better at this after all :)

One of the eggs I cracked was all white on the inside. Weird. I had a good feeling about removing THAT one!

lockdown seems to take longer than the first 18 days...

Well something told me to check the eggs. Good thing too. The temp had fallen again. !!!!!!! ?????? what I wanted to do is not in the book. One egg was cold to the touch. I checked and it chirped. I quickly layed it on a heating pad and pricked its air space and its breathing fine although i don't know if it will make it. The other 4 are dead and beginning to decompose.

. I have one very lonely Fav. that's is healthy and chirping one that might make it from 13 eggs because my one yr. old Genesis hovabator has flipped its lid. The warranty is off now.

I think I will just use a broody or order chicks for awhile my heart is broken. I did ectopses. The chicks were formed but beginning to liquefy.

I have thick olive eggs and dark welsummers. My normal flashlight technique isn't working for candling these eggs. I need to candle this weekend end. I need a powerful light. Any suggestions?

For some reason my incubator got down to 95! The last time it did this was about 10 days ago. Hopefully it won't do it again... I'll be candling one more time on Tuesday then lockdown that evening. WOW ALREADY??? 24 eggs set aside for next batch. Maybe. This one turns out to be a tragedy I probably won't attempt for awhile unless I get a broody.

Aw nuts! I feel bad for those with temp problems. What the heck is with those units, eh? So frustrating. If I had known what troubles I was in store for with the LG & the Hovabator genesis, I would have spent the extra money & got a Brinsea. I've told hubby that's what I want for Xmas. I feel I can still use the other units as back ups, for staggered hatches,...

Hurray for those doing well! Yeah lockdown is really intense, yet very slow-going! I've got a ways to go yet. 9 days left until broody #1 hatches those BLRWs. 15 days until broodies #2 & #3 hatch out my Malines. Go broodies go!

I got a Coleman camping flashlight (fairly small, 6 aa batteries) at Walmart for about $20. It works on my very dark Marans eggs. I split a toliet paper roll and cut it down to make a softer end that would snug up to the eggs better. I used electrical tape around it to hold everything in place. It is rated at 240 lumens (I think). There is one with a lower lumen rating for a little less money, but, Hey, I was dealing with Marans eggs.

That looks just like mine, except it has /MAX labeled after the Coleman name. Probably the same thing. I learned a neat tip somewhere, where you line the toilet roll extension piece with foil wrap. Helps get more light through the egg. ;)

Ooh. I like that idea. I'll put that on my list of things to try.

I have this flashlight but I think it's the lower lumen rating. I candled one on day 15 and still did a really good job - but I do have 1 marans egg & it's really hard to see with it.
