July Hatch-A-Long

400
Hi fellow hatchers!
I have 6 bourbon red turkey eggs and 14 guinea eggs in the cooler-bator. And the chicken eggs should arrive tomorrow! (I ordered 12 but already know there will be extras) oh how I LOVE hatching!
This is my 3rd time. And I have never hatched anything but chickens before.
I set the turkeys June 30 & the guines july 2.
Should I build a new incubator to move the guineas into when I lockdown the turkeys? Since they'll be due to hatch 2 days different?

I've got all my egg in the incubators, 12 CLB due 7/22- 4 SBEL, 2 OE, 12 silkie due 7/23- 8 silkie, 10CLB due 7/24. Supper excited! Crossing my fingers that this goes well!!

Cynthia, BTW, it is amazing that you hatched anything out of that shipment! What breed were they?
You know what? I am not sure. I won those eggs from an Easter Hatch A Long contest. The gal had sent some pure Analusian mostly, but those didn't make it, and the others were mixed. I felt so bad for her. This was her very first time to mail eggs. She wanted to help with contest prizes. I felt so bad for her. Thinking she hasn't mailed any more out. :/

With the difference in size here, I would say...yes! :D

The main reason shipped eggs, have a problem hatching. Get past the first part of the guy talking about those little cars. :/ You will be surprised at how the packages, are dumped, and go bump bump bump down the line. Interesting. But, like he says, you really didn't think that we sort them all by hand did you?

So true, and I am sure that the pressure changes while flying on planes doesn't help the eggs any either. I would be happy if I get a hen and a roo out of this batch of eggs.

I haven't mailed any eggs yet, but I do mail jewelry that I sell online. I kept having things get broken in the mail and when I finally stopped marking them fragile, they stopped breaking. Seriously, it was a constant problem and then it didn't happen again for months and then only rarely after that. Made me think that labeling anything "fragile" just invites trouble and that some of it may be intentional.

Update on my broody hen hatching project. The hen has never done this before, and neither has her person! On day 23 one chick hatched. Beautiful, healthy perfect baby. We ended needing to move broody due to chicken harassment. Our goal was to move the chick and the eggs to attract "Broody" to stay in the new spot. Then once it looked like she was staying to pull the 'bad' eggs out. I gently moved the chick and the eggs, while hubby held the nearly dangerous hen. When he set her down she charged into the new spot so frantically, she broke an egg. The chick inside was alive.. had broken the membrane but not externally pipped, but not through the shell Where the chick hit the egg the break was at the yoke sack. Lots of blood, goop, and yoke. The chick shuttered a couple of times and left us both miserable when it quit moving and passed. Now Broody is taking care of Genesis, the new chick, as well as back to sitting on the eggs, these are dark shelled eggs and difficult to candle. Plus Broody get very upset when disrupted. The egg disaster happened about 5 hours ago, on day 25... I have heard now so many stories of eggs hatching much later then expected. I thought I would give those eggs through the night hours tonight and tomorrow day. If you think this is a bad plan please tell me. By the way she is a great mom, even while sitting on eggs, she is directing, teaching and ensuring the safety of her beautiful little chick.

It IS intentional. I remember reading an article about some expose where the postal workers would look at it and feel offended somehow, so they'd make sure to drop, kick or otherwise damage the box. Unbelievable. I have found that labeling "LIVE CARGO" gets fairly good results, is only because the jerk-offs don't know what's in there, mealworms, eggs or a barracuda for all they can figure!
