July Hatch-A-Long

Sadly one of my chick had broken its leg today! So took it inside and decided I would have to amputate the leg (as it was already infected etc.) So I got some Dettol and dabbed it on! Then cut it off (the chick dint seem to feel it, o it was just brave!

) Dipped it in Dettol again and then in flour (we had nothing else!) Then applied a tissue on it until the bleeding stopped! It stopped very quickly so I immediately put on a plaster!
I hope I gets better! Luckily its hoping around with its friends! (I decided to take some other chicks and put them with him!) They are all fine and I really hope

it gets better and makes it!
Ha it ever happened to somebody else before or does someone have a one-legged chicken???

Oh my... I think YOU are very brave, let alone the chick!! I hope the baby is alright! It is amazing how animals can adapt to having one less leg!

Good news! I went down tonight (day 16) to candle the possibly cooked quail eggs. I saw 3 internal pips in the first 5 or 6 eggs, including one with movement inside the egg, so I decided to stop checking on them and lock down. I observed them for maybe another 5-7 minutes and saw 3 other eggs rocking.

The only thing I can think is that when the temp spiked to 115 (presumably for the 4-5 hours between visits), that was at the level of the thermometer, which is about 3 inches above the eggs (because there isn't any spare room on the floor). I had a pretty big vent hole at floor level and the fan must have drawn in enough cool air to keep the eggs from overheating.

These are shipped eggs but they didn't travel by air so I may still get a good hatch out of these yet. Regardless of the result, I have about 50 of my own eggs waiting to be set.

I saw 1 external pip this morning before I left for work, and the wife says two had already hatched by noon. Here's hoping for a nice surprise when I get home. I really wasn't expecting any to make it, so I ran out at lunch and bought some starter feed and I'll have to set up a brooder when I get home.

My Serama babies are almost 3 weeks old. They're pretty well feathered already and have their cute little wings and fly really well. I like that I can already tell the gender of two of my chicks (the combs are already bigger than the other chicks and starting to get red). I think I started seeing gender differentiation since last week. I used to be able to hold all four of my chicks on the palm of my hand... they've basically tripled in size since then.

I didn't know I was missing so much without these guys. Seramas are seriously the best! They grow really quickly, come in soooo many colors and feathering types, and are really affectionate. Their eggs are small, yes, but are also super cute!

Three days to lockdown! My last chance to get some of my heritage RIR on the ground to select from for next years breeding! Not even going to candle... too inexperienced and dark eggs... last time had them out too long and shrink wrapped them and they died. :fl
