Jumbo Coturnix Quail - Learn Me A Few Things

30%?? My turkey feed is only 20% too. I bought 100 lbs for $20 this morning because I thought is was a better deal than 20% gamebird at $26 for 100lbs. For my turkeys. Not quail.

A 50# bag of feed is $20 here...

A 50lb bag here is around $15. That's pretty much the same for layer or chick. Then at a feedstore a little further away sells the Gamebird for $14. While TSC sells their Dumor for $13 for chick and $15-18 for layer.

When the turkeys were younger they got straight 30% but now we tend to mix it with Dumor chick.

Next batch of quail, I'll split them up and feed one Dumor Chick and the other Gamebird and watch for a difference. We feed them 30% right now and the couple we got our eggs from thought they looked a week older than they really were. But like I said, since we didn't have a control group I cannot say the extra protein made a difference or not.

If I remember to split them up and experiment, I'll be sure to post the results.

I don't have a quail egg turner. I know they are too small for a chicken eggs turner. I do have a goose egg turner. Goose eggs lay on their side and rock back and forth. If I secure them so they don't roll they should do fine in the goose egg turner laid on their side - yes??

Hmmm... any chance you have a quail egg carton you can cut in strips and place in the turner? That might work.

What kind of incubator do you use for your chickens?

Someone on BYC mentioned that there are rings in the bottoms of their incubator's chicken egg turner that a quail egg will settle into. They were not designed intentionall for this, but the person said that it worked well for them. Maybe a close examination of your chicken egg turner will show a way that may work.

I think that as long as you could find a way to secure them from rattling too badly, your goose turner would work. I wonder if you could just pack enough of them onto each row of the goose turner that they would secure themselves?

I don't own any automatic turners yet. I turn by hand and when I hatched quail, we had near 100 eggs! LOL

I dutifully turned each individual egg gingerly twice a day.....

Yeah, that lasted for about half a week!! Then I just used my hands and rolled the whole batch in a clumsy swirling motion. HAHA!

I'm working on converting a refridgerator into an incubator and there will be a GQF auto turner in there! No more handturning for this chick.
