Jumbo or not?

To weigh your bird, I would suggest tucking the head under the right wing and gently rock the bird back and forth a few times then set it on the scale on it's right side. You could also pull a little on its legs before setting it down on the scale. This method should put the bird to sleep until it pulls its head from under the wing. Sometimes they stay in that position for several minutes.

Really? That's fascinating. I've never heard of that before. I used to do a trick with baby chickens where you lie them down on their back for a few moments and they doze off

They look so cute when they do that. I will have to see if I can get a chance to try this out sometime

I forgot about this it dose work with bobs and pigeons so it should work with cots too.

It should work for all of the above. Works great on pheasants. When you set the bird down on its side with the head tucked under the wing, pull on both legds to strech them out until the birds goes to sleep. You will feel it relax. Nighty night.

The best way to weigh a Quail is to get a small box and weigh it. THEN put the quail in the box and weigh it again. Subtract the box weight and you will have the weight of the quail. A postal scale works best. Remember a hen doesn't reach it's maximum weight untill they have been laying for a while

Can anyone tell me how to put the birds head under it's wing? I'm finding it difficult to move the birds' heads, they keep squirming away from me, lol

Works for chickens ,bet it will work on quail. When me and bro were kids that was a contest we had to see who could put the most chickens to sleep like that before one would wake. That was in fifties we had no phones /no TV / one radio that worked now and then/no computers/no neighbors for miles. It was wonderful...cva34

Ooops.....I just read my post again and realized I had made a mistake with the stretching the legs part. You should tug on the legs a little only AFTER you set the bird down on the scale.

The box method would also be a good way to weigh your bird and closing the lid on the box would help keep the bird from jumping around while it's on the scale. The key is to have it dark inside the box so your bird thinks its night time.

I just hold the bird in my right hand and gently lift the right wing a little with my right fingers while holding the bird, then quickly with my left hand push its head under the wing and hold the wing down. Throughout the process I shout, "STOP RESISTING"!
