June 2021 Hatch - A - Long

Pics
Has anyone ever successfully hatched and raised a singleton? I've got a single egg in the incubator due tomorrow, and its rolling around something fierce right now-so it might make it! All other siblings died around day 12.

I have two, two week old EE chicks in the brooder right now, and I'm sortof banking on being able to put this new one in with them. Does that sound like a terrible idea?

I've also got a broody hen on 9 eggs, but they are only about 5 days into things, and I don't want to disturb her. Though this egg is her baby oddly enough :D

Honestly, it really isn’t wise, but it’s been done. Mirrors and a stuffed toy to snuggle with are recommended.
I fully believe you’re going to have the best chance with putting it with the other two. Give it about a day to get its strength, but then see how it goes.

We have an internal pip! Its cheeping away at me!

I lost far too many chicks around this stage last year....6 fully developed chicks, some external pips, some only internal. I still don't really understand what happened so...im super paranoid for this guy.
How is your little one doing? Did it hatch yet?😊

Can you pick up a younger chick at the local feed store or on craigslist? A single chick is hard, but doable. Agree you may be able to place with your 2 week olds with some effort. I currently have 2 chicks together that are now 3 weeks and 6 weeks of age and have been together since the youngest was about 2 days old.😊

He is hatching right this minute!! He is really struggling to get through the membrane....its super thick (and I know from cooking with his *cough cough* siblings). I broke down and helped a bit...I cut a tiny slit in his first attempt just to make certain he had enough air.

Should I help him more?? He is making tiny little pinhole slits in it, but hes about halfway zipped so far and the membrane is still totally there!!

and wow do I use a super high baby voice in this video :p

Look at this membrane! Just a bunch of tiny holes!! Do I help??

And yes, I can run out and buy a chick today no problem, im just worried about that for two reasons. One, the two EE i got were from the store, and they had some serious diarrhea for about a week. Im scared to bring home a sick chick and kill this one in that process. Two. I only have one brooder...so the two new ones would have to go in with the two older ones anyways. But maybe having a buddy his size would be helpful?
