June 2023 Hatch-a-long

Pics
My quail have 5-7 days. Seems so long but prepping for a grad party so that will make the time fly. The party will be at my brother in laws and a group of us will camp on his property so I am gone from evening of day 13 to sometime day 15. Heard they hatch day 16-18 so plan is to take turner out day 13 and up humidity day 15.

All five of my duck eggs that made it to lockdown hatched! :celebrate Was so anxious after that power outage, but it only seemed to make them a little late. I'll post pics of them later tonight when they'll hold still for a moment lol

I do have a question though about my other set of eggs that I had set about 3 days after the ones that just hatched... Day 28 today for them, none have pipped externally yet, and all of them look like they're shadowing EXCEPT this one. I saw movement when candling while quickly spraying as Holderread recommends, and I just noticed this dark mark on the egg that I don't remember seeing before.

Is that bruising from trying to pip at the wrong end? 😖 These were shipped eggs.

I don't have ducks, but have read lots of threads on them. Believe I have read if bruising they are trying to pip and make a tiny safety hole. Wish I could think of who gives the main advice on it to tag. Let me try to find it

I'm not happy today. This morning, I found two ducklings dead and one in bad shape. Subsequently lost that one. When I checked shortly after, two more dead. So in a matter of hours, I lost five ducklings. Of course, they were all my blue ducklings.

I brought the two survivors inside, and they are with the ones that just hatched. BTW, up to six, one pipped still in the incubator, and two internal pips I think.

This is partially my own fault for not having a secure area for the babies to sleep, although since most of the deaths occurred in the nest box (a very large storage bin with a hole in the side) I think they were trampled by Momma.

At least I have the new ones, but I'm still really miffed.
