June hatch-a-long!

Well had 17 out of 22 viable eggs and was looking at one in particular today and I think it's not gonna go any further

Not surprised, exactly, though I figured it would die once it got too big. The egg is very narrow and long. The embryo is visible but it doesn't move at all.

So now 16 eggs left to hopefully make it.

I am on day 6. 2 separate shipments. In from Mississippi, one from Florida. I'm in Cali. Bad idea shipping so far. I knew it was a gamble. I am down to about 8-10 viable eggs. 1 shipment only 1 egg started to develop. It's questionable if it will quit or not. . Other shipment got list for a day in Kentucky. Every single aircell from that batch was detached. So far about 10 show signs of vein development, and I can see 5 moving. Yay! Will not be the best hatch for spending $210. But... Still hoping for some chicks. I knew the risk. Just hoped the odds would play better in my favor.

On a related note (about shipping) I keep wondering how much could a business profit of their sole dealing was in delivering things like hatching eggs and other such stuff that was very fragile. I mean, I'd love to use a business like that because then I'd know that the utmost care was being taken with my chicks.

My broody was sitting on the eggs this morning. I hope this means the change in location was successful.

Yesterday my hen broke two of the eggs so we’re down to 18. I cleaned the others the best I could while trying to be careful with them. Luckily she was more careful sitting back down the remaining eggs and so hopefully no more break today

I paid $50 for a dozen isbar hatching eggs (can we say impulse buy?). 4 made it to lockdown, 3 hatched and only 1 made it. So there’s my $50 chick. Better than a total failure I guess. At least I have some chance of crossing him (pretty sure it’s a rooster) with cream legbars and getting ice cream bars

I won these guys in a giveaway on instragram from Montana! This is my first bird incubation and I’m so nervous and excited! I’ve also thrown a few of my light brahma eggs in there too. Wish this noob good luck!

I do believe the change was successful. Now the waiting.

I was rather surprised yesterday evening. I went to collect any late eggs and close the hen house. I found a bantam egg by an outside water dish...well,okay, my Cornish Bantam does that often.

I went to close things up and she was sitting in the nest box. She is two and has shown no inclination to brood.

Evidently she is at least thinking about it since she is still there. Usually she is the first one running when there is food to be had.

Maybe this brooding is contagious. Maybe, that is for the best. Now that I have an incubator I am finding the bantam eggs a real temptation.

I candled my brahma eggs this morning and all looked good. It'll be time to go into lockdown on Saturday and they should hatch Tuesday, I can't decide what to put in the incubator next!

I need to move my broody Dorking into her new house on Saturday too, fingers crossed she stays put this time!
