June Hatch A Long

FIRST EXTERNAL PIP!!!! It’s a Welsh Harlequin egg from Metzer, originally a slightly displaced air cell.

Whew. I feel so relieved when I see an external pip like okay, someone made it this far... odds are it can’t be a total wash, now.

:wee

Heres a question.

I can only get the little giant to be at 98 or 102. Classic.

Since it’s only going to be used for an egg that has started assist or a duckling that needs more time, I’m thinking of saying 98 is good and stop trying to get it any higher.

And I read a lot of people turn down the incubator a degree or two once hatch starts, does here anyone do that?

Have about 4-5 external pips... and two are on the wrong end. But they’re moving and shaking and chirping so we will see what happens.

The bruised egg is now externally pipped through the bruise. Out of the air cell. It’s in a huge air cell egg so we will see....

I’ve attached the best photos I can get of both these wrong end pips.

The first is the bruised one, if you squint you can see the bruise. The pip is in the middle of one bruise, about 10:00 position from the 8 marked in the egg. Then there’s another bruise to the left.

This one here is the far egg right under the heating element. This little guy is vigorously moving and pecking away.

OH NO

One of my carton eggs is pipping on the bottom too. And I have 7 at least external pips.

Do I risk the other pips to grab it out of the carton? I could most and grab and put it in the other incubator and be in and out. It’s moving so I haven’t lost it yet but I will if I don’t move it

Jolenesdad, I have no advice for you and am feeing like a poor Hatcher right now, but I just want to offer you a heartfelt wish for the best of luck with your babies!:fl

What a ridiculous beginning to the long wait!

I think I’m gonna do it. I think I’m gonna move this egg. I can’t get it out of mind that I put it in a carton and it’s a goner if I leave it.

Okay it also pipped through a bruise. I THINK it looks a lot worse than it is. It’s still chewing and moving. There’s dried blood/bruising in the membrane though. I put coconut oil on it while I moved it.

Fingers crossed little buddy!

I’m running 65% in the hatching incubator. If I crack it just to most the sides I don’t fall and hit 75% and then if I crack it to get the egg I hit 60, but settled back to 65 quickly. That seems fine, right?

Okay expert hatchers, I could use some advice! After incubating for 18 days, eight eggs went into lockdown, split under two broody hens. All but one OE egg were set at the same time; one OE was set 15 hours late. Naruto got three OE eggs and one BCM eggs. Two of the OE and the BCM looked good but I suspected that one OE was DIS. Susan got 2 good OE, the late set OE, and one BCM that I suspected was DIS. Narutos eggs started hatching Friday night, at the beginning of day 20. By sat morning, midway through day 20, she had two babies, I’m not sure which ones. She is still setting but I got a quick peek under her and think she has two OE still under her. Took a quick peek under Susan. No action. Since 2 eggs have now hatched 36 hr before the rest, I’m getting quite concerned. Also, Susan hasn’t left the nest now for three days (when I kicked her off last before setting day 18 eggs), though I did get her to drink some water. She’s lost weight during this whole thing, and I’m worried about her health. I suspect a problem with the OEs, maybe the roo was too young? He’s about 9 months... Question: have my daughter remove Susan, try to get her to eat and drink while I candle her eggs? Maybe drill safety holes if I see movement in the babies? Or just leave them alone until tomorrow night? I don’t plan to mess with Naruto until she wants to get up as it would be too disruptive; I’ve been able to feed and water her two chicks. She is still very aware of her eggs, keeps looking at them and touching with her beak. Thanks for any thoughts!

@jolenesdad , I don't lower my temps for hatch but I would pick 98 in the assist incubator as well.
I wouldn't have been able to leave the pipped egg stuck in the egg carton either! 65% humidity is good! It will spike as they start to hatch anyway, you should be just fine!
I'm super excited about your hatch by the way!! Keep the updates coming!

@Mixed flock enthusiast , that's a really difficult one to offer my opinion on because it's so bassed on what you are comfortable with. For one, I don't think you would be hurting anything to take her off the eggs to get some food and water and to candle the eggs, so I would at least do that much for peace of mind! :fl Hope everything works out!

I would get her some food and water and candle, too.

ALSO all is not lost. I kept the birds penned for most of the day until the real heat came along today. I went out to open the pen AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW?

Mr 9-week-Old-missing-for-two-days Delaware is BACK! Running alone in front of the locked pen. Excuse my language but this is a literal WTF moment. A 9 week old not even one pound bird completely disappeared and on their own for two days in heat index of 110 degrees and its FINE.
