June Hatch A Long

Ok, so I know that this was really crazy... but I actually incubated the ducks and guineas together, then combined them with breeder bought chicks in the brooder. So, we had ducks, chickens, and guineas all together, 15 of each! This was just as insane as it sounds.... I wanted to get one big happy flock out of this, but they really self-segregated and were kind of mean to each other. I’ve wondered if that’s why as older juveniles the guineas started going after select ducks and chickens, because the guineas were the smallest in the brooder and got pushed around a lot... I also lost a couple of chicks while brooding, maybe from the wet conditions (not water as much as all of that wet duckling poo!) maybe as the start of my Marek’s problems. At any rate, I now agree with the advice of practically everyone everywhere not to brood mixed species together! I’m just too stubborn for my own good, had to see for myself.:he

Well, hopefully I don't learn a hard lesson myself because I'm about to put turkeys, peacocks, and quail on lockdown and chicks shortly after. lol
I have plenty of incubators so the tiny quail don't get trampled but I really only have the proper set up for 2 brooders with heat plates. I can always set another brooder with a heat lamp if turkeys and peacocks decide they don't like each other but I'm really not very fond of heat lamps...lol, I may have to rehome them sooner than planned I guess.

Not sure what color it is, but the second keet hatched!!! I have video of it hatching but don’t have a YouTube account to upload there... anyone have a way to convert video to upload instead of linking to another site? This guy is spastic and cheeping up a storm!!! I think they really want mama guinea when they hatch!!!

Edit: sorry meant to post on June - July hatchalong! It’s a cross post but I’ll just leave it here anyway! :celebrate

Like @Mixed flock enthusiast , I joined this one. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/june-july-hatch-along.1315585/

I didn't even realize there were 2 going until she told me. lol
We should have just done a summer hatch a long.

I didn’t see there were two, either! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Mosey2003 i think I’m going to stick to “hosting” one a year but I’ll participate in anyone’s!!! Next year I’m going to have a few contests too. :) I’ve got the baby ducks now and a ton of meat birds I’m dealing with in the heat in their final weeks so I’m a bit spread thin.

Same here finishing up processing the CornishX and we are also super busy through the rescue I work through as well (Fourth of July and Fireworks and all) plus the garden and all the normal summer chores. Going to have to find another batch of eggs to incubate hmm....any suggestions? Will have to ship them no one local has good quality orps to incubate.

Ugh 4th of July... I have such a love hate. It’s such a nice, no pressure and fun holiday, but people are jerks and it’s so dangerous for horses and dogs.

Are you in any Orpington groups on Facebook? I don’t know what there is but I’m sure there’s a resource there. I just joined a Delaware group and I’ve been trying for I don’t know HOW long to find a utility meat breeder of Delawares. Anyway, through the group I’ve been able to find someone with their own improved line of Delawares that are getting to. 3 lb finished weights at 12 weeks. I can’t wait to hatch some of their birds.

If you find a great Orpington group on FB let me know and ill research some today too. We are back in heat advisories this week and I want nothing to do with it. :hit

I have an empty incubator and I'm sad haha. Wonder if I can convince hubby to let me fire it up one more time.... Although I do have my hands full right now. Canning season is getting started. I'm working on a tractor for some Cornish I have coming next month. Older kid home for the summer. the garden... :th

“Older kid home for the summer” means extra set of hands? ;-) sounds like plenty of opportunities to incubate!!!

Just a quick update on the 2 ratty babies. lol! I think the first one might be a Silkie mix, I only see fluff growing in and the second chick has some bronze coloring. I'm going to have to keep these little mutts for my flock just to see what they grow into. :gig
