June Hatch A Long

Pics
You’re doing so well for your babies! I love the partitions you’ve made. They’re so lucky to have you.

I’ve never had a broody and sometimes (SOMEtimes) I’m thankful. I’d be a micro-manager. And I think being fully prepared is a must, it’s not entirely fair IMO to expect all the girls to be okay with the babies, or mama to be prepared to defend them, or to be a mother!

Babies in a flock with their mama is ADORABLE though and natural and makes me squee. I’ll cross the broody bridge when it presents itself. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mine toooooooooooo. This was just last week.

This opal legbar hen was my very first home-hatched chick. Because of those disaster separators I used, she, and then another chick day 2 of the hatch, a male splash marans, had to come out solo and be in the warmer dry-out brooder by themselves for a bit. They’re basically imprinted and so sweet. They’d rather perch on a human than just about anywhere else.

Meanwhile, I’ve been googling silver penciled rocks all day.
Your pics of your daughter with her half grown chick are just too cute!

Ok, so Lacy and Summer are in the maternity ward together. Lacy is on day 8 and Summer day 16. The nests are separate, but the hens switch all the time. The eggs are marked differently so that's not a problem. When Summer's eggs hatch, will both hens abandon Lacy's eggs? Or will everything be fine and one/both of the hens still care for the eggs?

I don't actually know the answer to your question because hens are unpredictable but I have had two broodies this year that had nothing to do with each other's brood. They weren't overlapped by much though and they didn't trade boxes. On the other hand, I have seen my friend's broodies "dual Mom" and raise chicks together but they actually crammed themselves into the same box, lol.
I have 3 broody hens playing musical nest boxes right now so it will be interesting to see how this works out but fortunately I will be giving them eggs on the same day. In your case, I would probably have an Incubator on standby just in case.

All nine of the babies I expected to hatch hatched. :) I'm not sure on the breeds of all and I missed the hatching of some, so I don't know which egg colors they came out of. I can recognize one as an easter egger and I know one of the darker ones is a black copper marans. I can post better and individual photos of them later, but if anyone has any guesses of what they could be, please tell me.

It may be a bit easier to determine which is which with individual images but they sure are adorable! Congrats on a great hatch!

Individual photos when they dry like cluckndoodle said. I think I see a male legbar.

We also have multiple broodies with eggs so I searched for this scenario on BYC as best I could. Multiple people reported issues from co-brooding, like one hen attacking the chicks that another hen hatched. It sounds like it’s working for CluckNDoodle though. I didn’t want to chance it and needed flock separation for 2 of my three as they were getting bullied, so mine are each separated.
