June Hatch A Long

Pics
so the Barring gene gives the boys a (white or dark?) dot on their heads? I see some of my OE (wheaten ameraucanaxmarans) X Columbia Rock chicks look much like my Barnvelders did and three of them have black spots on their heads and the kind of brown striping down their backs. I’ll try to get some pictures tomorrow. I know with crossing two Hybrids nothing is going to be reliable... but it’s certainly going to be interesting!

I often get this mixed up but I believe when a hen is barred all of her barred offspring is supposed to be male and when a rooster is barred it doesn't offer a sexlinked offspring because it's a dominant gene so both male and female can be barred.

I'm so sorry!!
Do you have an Incubator? Maybe you can join us for next months hatch-a-long sounds inevitable for several of us already. Lol

I don't have an incubator just yet; this was purely a test run for an unexpected broody. I had thoughts of going to the Tennessee State Fair and seeing what was being shown and who was breeding what locally, as I don't really have an idea of what I want to do.
My husband and I talked about me breeding as I very much am interested, I just don't have a solid direction. So once I sell off the boys I have now, and figure out what I want to do, I'll buy an incubator and invest in some eggs from a breeder this fall.

Hey all! I am starting Day 7 this afternoon. I've been drooling over some BCM eggs from a certain breeder, I bid on a dozen, and won! It looks like out of the 12, 5 started developing, 1 looks like a potential early quitter , but the other 4 are looking good. For shipped eggs this time of year, I'm pretty happy with 4!

I definitely didn't need more right now, but I couldn't resist! I have 8 from a March hatch that are almost big enough to go with the big girls, so the brooder space will be opened up for the new hatch.

The auto-sexing of Legbars has to do with double barring over the wild type coloring.

@Kris5902 , I just realized I read your question wrong. When they are a pure barred breed the white dot on the head I believe is supposed to be more likely a rooster but it's not 100% reliable in my experience. Once their feathers grow in the hens almost always appear to be darker to me and the roosters seem to have wider white barring. I only have 1 little Bantam Barred Cochin though so I'm far from an expert, lol.

That sounds so fun! Well I'm sure we hatching addicts will see you in another hatch-a-long once the time comes! Lol
