June Hatch A Long

All right we're all going into withdrawal tonight my cell phone needs to cool off and my web cam for the brooder won't be in until tomorrow. The ducks are all out of the eggs. Little yellow duckie has had a bath because she was all crusty and yucky and couldn't get warm. The others are all pretty good on their feet until they randomly fall over backwards and then they may lay there and take a nap or pedal for a while until they can flip over lol. All in all they seem pretty healthy the little yellow one is still sleepy and I gave her a little water cause it has some herbs and probiotics in it to help them get some energy after hatching. I also put a little bit of their food in the water to get them the idea that it's food lol.

I have to thank everyone for all the help, encouragement, and support. This has been a very positive experience for me. After my first hatch I was wondering if I would be strong enough to try again, or if the incubators were a waste, because I wouldn’t have the courage to attempt another hatch. (My losses were heartbreaking and not knowing who needed culled soon enough left me with week olds that I eventually realized needed it, which was also very hard for me)

I can now say I have regained some confidence and I will be able to move ahead with regularly hatching out meat chicks and more layers. You are all awesome! I really appreciate all the experience and knowledge you all have and your willingness to share it!

OH MY GOODNESS!!
I had no signs of anything last night (end day 20 with broody mumma) but at 8.00 this morning there are at least 4 gorgeous fluffy butts! There may be more, I'm not disturbing mum at this point, but all 4 are really fluffy and active. Yay, first EVER babies, so excited. First time mumma too and she has been an absolute champ!

Okay.... questions. If anyone knows...

I’m thankful for all of these situations presenting themselves and want to make sure I learn as much as I can from them all! It’s part of what gives me confidence in hatching is participating in something like this so if my own things go wrong I can learn from them and feel like there was a greater purpose for the future. Forgive any dumb questions, please.

Siblings..... so were they set at the same time?

Is it possible to know what could cause the first six or so to have pipped so many days before? And pipped before the yolks were absorbed? Was it their size? Can something happen to cause such drastic growth that they would need to pip the shell but not technically be ready like temp or genetics or ?

And why would these two not have been affected in the same way?

I think I have 5 looking like growth, 4 clears, and one egg so darkly spotted I can’t tell.

Also high temperatures during incubation can cause earlier hatches as well as prematurely unzipping before the yolk sac is absorbed.

I’m just sitting here wondering how many of my previous hatches I could have done something for. Not in a regretful way in a interested for the future way.

Also high temperatures during incubation can cause earlier hatches as well as prematurely unzipping before the yolk sac is absorbed.

I think there must also be some other factors too though, I mean... I’ve had good humidity for the most part throughout my hatch, and 29 perfectly normal chicks, almost all on time, but I still had that random cup baby with the unabsorbed yolk... and it wasn’t even particularly large. I think the front of my incubator where my Marans eggs were might be a little on the cooler side though, as well as the corners, despite it being a circulating model.

There can definitely still be hot and cold spots in an incubator. It's another reason why I like the Nurture Right 360 so much because it rotates the eggs all the way around the incubator so they aren't in any one spot all day.
There are definitely soooo many other possible factors. Heat and humidity are just the more common and easier explanations. Genetics play a role, bacteria, how long the egg rested before being set. All of these things have an impact.
