June Hatch A Long

Pics
Ok, got home and as I worried I lost the shrink wrapped egg I oiled, the oil dried on, Husband didn’t re oil it, he was worried to open the incubator. And the poor thing was basically shellacked in place. Of my 7 remaining Marans eggs, from my probably too young but I tried anyway pullet, two are good, chirping and alive. One is shrink wrapped much like the last chick... not internally pipped yet... but with a dried out inner membrane. It’s my fault, I know. I have oiled it... it’s still very much alive, humidity and temp returning to 70% and good... how often will I need to re oil this chick? Is there anything else I should do?

You can see it’s still alive but I can’t see the beak at all... it looks much like the first one did. I’m almost done here, down to my last three eggs, the others all quit, not especially early but not particularly late. Considering how young mama is I’m not as surprised by this.

I'm so sorry! :hugs
I never used the oil myself, I've only used water just to check for veining so I'm unsure of how often to apply it.

Should I try Saran Wrap over it or something to help keep it moist? Humidity is back to 76%. I have to get my sick cat home and medicate him and his sister (vet apt picking him up was why I was away) but then I’m going to come right back down

Would not use Saran wrap personally. I can think of too many things that could go wrong with it...

@Kris5902 , I'm sorry for the delay, just happened to wake up and peek at the thread so I had to get on the computer to see the video. There's no pip through the membrane right? You may need to create a small pip for the chick to breath. Do you still have the assisted hatch link?

Thanks!!! Not late timing at all, just settling my cat back home and securing my bathroom. Putting up the chickens, and other necessities. I now know how to set up an iv for fluids, though, yay.

I will re read and refresh myself, head back down and proceed I’m not too good with links on here so you reposting it for me is extremely helpful. I’m on cell phone data only because I don’t have Internet connection 90% of the time. I can see the finish line on this hatch... and I know the shrink wrapping is all on me. I couldn’t just leave cup baby though to suffer.

I’ve made the pip in the inner membrane, really worried about this one, it was too soon and was definitely shrink wrapped, I think the one from this morning would have been ok if I was here keeping the membrane moist I did nick a blood vessel, but there wasn’t too much bleeding... I just can’t see the beak and don’t want to hurt it.

My broody is on day 18. I wonder, do they stop turning the eggs? Do they stay on the nest and not leave? I guess I will find out. Meanwhile I am preparing a pen within the coop for her and the chicks. She is pretty low in the pecking order and also a bantam amongst large hens, so I want to help her keep the babies safe.

Don't say that! It's not your fault that you have a big heart and wanted to save the chick! I don't think many of us here could have ignored a chick that didn't absorb it's yolk sac! The intervention was needed! :hugs

Malpositons are the hardest assists to do and the least likely to be successful but the chick wouldn't make it without you trying. So you're basically just giving it a chance!
