June Hatch A Long

I have not tried. I have a broody Welsh Harlequin duck with no eggs who takes up a nest box and hisses and lunges at anything that walks past. I’m sure that I could not sneak anything under her at any time!

I've tried. The mama duck wanted nothing to do with the littles. In fact, she may have killed them had I not intervened and taken them back. They had to be brooder raised, and even then the duck hens were not thrilled about integration later.

Good to know. I'll leave her a few and take some for the non keeping. I don't think she'd take well to me trying to take from her.
I forgot how FAST ducks grow!!! The guys who hatched two weeks ago have already tripled their size!! They also hate me. Argh.

Beautiful babies! As for the “I hate you”, was it here or another thread about the ducks I've raised that view me as “treat dispenser” and “OMG, she’s going to kill me!” Simultaneously? :lau

You're a hero in my book because... NO lol
Lol. I was holding the snake in one hand at the level of my shoulder and its head nearly touching the ground, because evidently the adrenaline fried portion of my brain made me forget how to hold it properly, stomping toward the house and yelling at the top of my lungs for my daughter to come out and help me (again, I can only plead adrenaline brain). My lone guinea cock, who should have been guarding his girls nest, finally showed up in a frantic rush to defend his girls. I waved the snake at him and told him that he needed to up his game, and that I thought all should now be forgiven for my mistake in dropping the yeast container on their nest...

View attachment 1816367 6/10 of the light Sussex have hatched so far, 3 bantams have pipped (one has a tiny beak sticking out chirping but has decided he’s not ready to come out yet :lau)
The 6 hatchlings are currently playing football with the remaining eggs so going to have some pretty dizzy chicks :lau
Wow, lots of strong and alert looking chicks there! Congratulations!!!

Ok, I am not 100% caught up (this thread moves quickly), but want input from those more experienced.

Day 26 duck egg, dead or alive? It didn't look terrible to me, but I did not see movement.

lol, We're a chatty bunch! I love it though! Hehe.
I'll be the pessimist this time...something about the way it looks does make me think it may be a dud. Later in development, it's harder to tell because the veins recede much slower but the veining at the bottom looks oddly thin for a chick close to hatch. With that said, I would still wait and see what happens!! :fl

Also this morning around 7:00 am I awoke to our first external pip!

So exciting about the pip!!!
All my CCL hatched a day early last time have you seen that in your other hatches?

She is so adorable and I LOVE the mixed feather colors of the girls. Adding to my desirable list. I like varied flocks. :love

Yep, with my last batch of CCLs they were the first to hatch by about 8-12 hours compared to my Marans but I do feel like Marans are on the slower side of things as well. This flock seems to have smaller eggs and from the very beginning, they were developing extremely fast so I wouldn't be surprised at all if I see some peeps on day 19 or 20!

Thank you! The Whiting's True Blue eggs that I have on lockdown are from the same flock as my blue hen but there was only one hen in that flock with the same coloring so I doubt I'll get a repeat! I'm expecting a possible cream w/amber coloring or black w/copper. We'll see! I'd love for them to all look different, my daughter and I name all chickens in our flock and we've had a couple of comical ones that were "the twins" because we just couldn't tell. LOL!
