I have not tried. I have a broody Welsh Harlequin duck with no eggs who takes up a nest box and hisses and lunges at anything that walks past. I’m sure that I could not sneak anything under her at any time!
Good to know. I'll leave her a few and take some for the non keeping. I don't think she'd take well to me trying to take from her.I've tried. The mama duck wanted nothing to do with the littles. In fact, she may have killed them had I not intervened and taken them back. They had to be brooder raised, and even then the duck hens were not thrilled about integration later.
This is their current set up. Is this what you mean? @jolenesdadCan you possibly enclose them some way where there’s enough room for the chicks to get food and water and bounce around a bit without mama thinking she needs to get off the nest?
Beautiful babies! As for the “I hate you”, was it here or another thread about the ducks I've raised that view me as “treat dispenser” and “OMG, she’s going to kill me!” Simultaneously?Good to know. I forgot how FAST ducks grow!!! The guys who hatched two weeks ago have already tripled their size!! They also hate me. Argh.
Aww, so sweet! This is their current set up. Is this what you mean?View attachment 1816331
Lol. I was holding the snake in one hand at the level of my shoulder and its head nearly touching the ground, because evidently the adrenaline fried portion of my brain made me forget how to hold it properly, stomping toward the house and yelling at the top of my lungs for my daughter to come out and help me (again, I can only plead adrenaline brain). My lone guinea cock, who should have been guarding his girls nest, finally showed up in a frantic rush to defend his girls. I waved the snake at him and told him that he needed to up his game, and that I thought all should now be forgiven for my mistake in dropping the yeast container on their nest...You're a hero in my book because... NO lol
Wow, lots of strong and alert looking chicks there! Congratulations!!!View attachment 1816367 6/10 of the light Sussex have hatched so far, 3 bantams have pipped (one has a tiny beak sticking out chirping but has decided he’s not ready to come out yet)
The 6 hatchlings are currently playing football with the remaining eggs so going to have some pretty dizzy chicks![]()
Ok, I am not 100% caught up (this thread moves quickly), but want input from those more experienced.
Day 26 duck egg, dead or alive? It didn't look terrible to me, but I did not see movement.

All my CCL hatched a day early last time have you seen that in your other hatches?
She is so adorable and I LOVE the mixed feather colors of the girls. Adding to my desirable list. I like varied flocks.![]()
