Okay for the Orpington people I was reading through the breed standards for the British or English Orpingtons and found this...

"Virtually no leg feathering, could still show up from
time to time as with all imported orps."

So is some leg feathering acceptable? Still planning on keeping the mottleds that I have that are not feathered but thought it was interesting that it was specifically mentioned in the SOP.

Well, whoever is writing the SOP would definitely know better than I would, lol! I have always avoided any leg feathers personally and everything I have been told about English Orpingtons from breeders local to be that actually try to keep breed standards is that they shouldn't have feathered legs. So I guess even if it's permissible, if your goal is to breed more desirable Orpingtons long term then I would steer towards no feathered legs just from talking to my fellow English Orpington addicts locally.

Definitely I think I have two with feathers but still pretty birds. Going to keep a trio for my coop.

Honestly I don’t know much about genetics but I would assume by that it means like webbed feet in the marans... you don’t breed that specific bird that is exhibiting the trait, but the parents or siblings that don’t exhibit the trait can be evaluated for breeding.

I’ve seen feathers pop up singularly on legbar feet too.

Yeah that was my thought as well. For someone they would make great laying birds if they aren't breeding for show. I would rather pick birds from the hatch that meet the standard. I know the Lavender Orps and blues say that ideally they should have Pink feet as well but I have seen very few birds that actually have the pink skinned feet and legs.

I was packing up a few things and looking at my hatching notes... I found it interesting that I had a near perfect hatch rate (aside from my own mistakes) with the silver Appleyards, and I washed all of those eggs! I was originally really worried about that, but they were filthy.

In my one duck hatch, the dozen WH eggs were so muddy!!! Plus I was putting them in the incuabtor with other eggs... After a little reading, I dipped 1/4 in a peroxide solution, 1/4 in a bleach solution (soaked for like 3 min!), and 1/2 were unwashed. They all hatched, even the one that I dipped in bleach and accidentally left in a basket for a week before setting!

I ended up with a singleton. The other 5 eggs never hatched they were fully formed but were too big for their shell and couldn’t turn to pip my breeder friend told me.this is little patience
