June Hatch-A-Long

I’m keeping all these 3. There’s two more, but cockerels and the cockerels seem to have Cushion Combs while the pullets have the V Comb.

When I cross my Deathlayer with any of my purebred girls, it makes the offspring all different colors. No two are the same.

They all have black crests, you can kind of see little Mohawks sticking up. Unsure if they’ll get bigger or not, but I’ll keep taking pics monthly of them.
Interesting on the combs. Wouldn’t that be great to be able to autosex them by comb type. :p

That’s awesome though, variety is so much better!

They do look to have varying degrees of crests, lol, I hadn’t looked closely at first and didn’t see the one on the 2nd bird. it’ll be neat to see how they develop! All in all, looks like an awesome cross. :D

I am certainly going to continue with this cross. My husband said that I create the fanciest crosses 🤣 I guess I just have an eye for what breeds will look good together.

I’m trying bantam Brahma Deathlayers but they’re not going as well. Only 1 has hatched of the 6 I tried. I have 4 more in the bator so maybe at least 1 more will come out. I most likely will not continue that cross.

We have a Giant Deathlayer too (Jersey Giant Deathlayer Cross), but we are waiting for it to grow out. This is a cross our friend did.

I have leghorn pullets growing and I’ll cross them with the Deathlayer once they’re mature. I’m sure those will come out with great feathers patterns.

@Mixed flock enthusiast what would you do? @FortCluck?

@CluckNDoodle says she might roll the dice since it’s so close but not really sure.

To tell teh truth, how badly do you want those chicks and for them to survive? I would have had those eggs in the incubator as soon as I realized what was going through my flocks. Granted I have breeding programs and sell excess chicks, but still the fact remains that if you want healthy chicks who later can survive an outbreak of fowl pox, get them into the incubators now.

my 3 cents worth

I’ve not had to deal with this particular virus, and it looks like the chick vaccine isn’t really available, so you’d have to wait until 4 weeks old for them. The rest could be vaccinated; the label is meant for big poultry operations, and doesn’t always apply well to backyard flocks. I found this article informative:

As for the home showing... :fl :fl :fl

thank you!!!

Quick update: we are at Day 21 for our chicken eggs under a broody! A week ago, I found that one of her eggs was partially crushed. I waxed the dent and put it in the incubator. I think that the embryo is still alive, but the aircell is huge! As for the broody, Naruto, she has been suffering with the heat wave we’ve been having. Poor girl was so hot yesterday, she got off the eggs even though two were externally pipped! Going to check on her now.
My three times broody gets off during external pips in Texas heat. Makes me so nervous. I freaking put out a port a cool fan for the chickens yesterday.

Thank you! I’ve been thinking a lot about this and I have to say I don’t think I care about the chicks. They’re novelty and nothing I want to work with in the future.

I care far more about the two broodies... my favorite and my sons favorite. My thought here is that the most sure fire way to get these birds broken from broody after this long is to let them hatch. Breaking them any other way could prove very stressful and could not even be successful for the one who is sick.

Naruto! My daughter will be thrilled there are other anime fans in the chicken world!:love

Well, my hatching eggs arrived today. According to the tracking info, they were mistakenly sent to the wrong county after they arrived in Dublin, then had to be sent back to Dublin to be sorted before they could be sent here. 😡Stupid Post Office. So the eggs all have rolling air cells. They are the the worst air cells I have ever seen.
I am letting them rest a bit and then they will be going into the incubators upright & not turned for the first 7 days. Hoping that the air cells will reattach.
