June Hatch-A-Long

H'm, interesting! Apparently the blue egg gene is dominant, which with my limited knowledge I found a bit surprising.
If what I've read about brown eggs is true, think of the brown as being spray painted and it's not the actual shell color. Ie: the egg starts off white and gets a coat of paint somewhere along the way in the paint department.
So green eggs are blue eggs with a coating of brown paint on them.

Blue may be the dominant gene but I'm not sure if people have figured out the genome for the brown "spray paint" of brown egg layers. Again, from what I have seen here.
It certainly explains why the brown on brown eggs can wipe off on a damp towel but blue does not.

Ok, @CluckNDoodle ...did I get that right?

Just got a notification that the chicks I ordered went out of Iowa this afternoon. USPS is showing the shipment isn't expected until MONDAY! :th

However I've ordered from this hatchery before and it normally only takes 2 days, max.
Trying the breathe and relax here.....

What chicks did you order?

Im sure they’ll be there sooner

I was going to butcher the Cornish rocks this weekend and I have two hens and 5 cockerels.

Should I keep the hens?
Depends. How did you feed them? If it was in a typical meat bird manner they won't make it very long.
If you raised them in a typical layer manner they might make it to lay age, or enough time to snag some genetics...

They’ve been eating with the meat birds, but they don’t eat as much. I was thinking about putting them in the big run today with my layers. They’re 9ish weeks old and they have way less meat than the cockerels
