Thank you, that makes me feel a lot better. It's so easy to get attached to the ones you see hatch, you know?

I only get attached to certain ones. It’s after when they grow though. The ones I keep, I have learned this since I started selling this year.

If the chick pips the small end, then the internal & external pip are one. Most of these, I'm told, hatch without assistance but they can take quite a while from (external) pip to zip. I believe I remember someone saying 48 hours? I've had a few but at the time I didn't know what was normal or abnormal so I let them alone and they hatched just fine.

Most of my wrong end pips hatch without an issue. Usually when I have malposition they can’t even externally pip.

I’m getting nervous about these broodies. The bantam Brahma eggs and white Cochin eggs should be hatching this weekend. No idea what eggs they even have under them the ones they don’t hatch and leave, I’ll put in the somewhat empty bator.

Up to four BCM chicks now - just waiting on the last egg. The third chick hatched around 3am out of my second darker egg. And I just woke up now to find out that the one that had just started zipping when I went to sleep at 3:30pm had only zipped halfway round and the membrane was all dry and yellow. No movement. I panicked and grabbed it right away knowing something was wrong. The little chick had managed to get it's head down in the middle of the egg, but was still very much alive and ready to come out - I've never had that kind of issue before. S/he is in the incubator drying off as I type (and helping keep the humid high for the last egg).

And just like that, all five BCMs are hatched and doing well! And so finishes my final hatch for the season - or so I'm telling myself I think the incubator will need a bit of a break now - it's been going strong since the middle of March.

Does this look like bacteria in this egg to you guys? Did a day 7 candle today, and I think I’ve got another blood ring, and 2 that just seem to be infertile. If this one has bacteria I’m down to 2 potentially viable buff Orpington eggs.

Well, the first part of my staggered incubation is over. Out of 4 eggs that made it to lockdown, two hatched, and they were both shipped eggs. Go figure. One of our Polish hen, Lola's eggs pipped externally, then died within a few hours, so that was really hard. The two chicks we got are bantam cochins--a white one and a dark one, and they're strong and healthy.

The other part of the staggered incubation is 12 eggs on day 13 today (bantam cochin and bantam EE, plus 3 of our own eggs), so as soon as the newly hatched chicks were out, we put the turner back in and turned it on for these ones for a few more days. All 12 were candled this morning, and they look to be none the worse for their little stint in a home-made turner, so fingers crossed they all make it to hatch. I think I'll lock them down at day 18. One of the shipped eggs has a very saddled air cell, so it will need as long as possible being upright.
