June Hatch-A-Long

First, I'm very sleep deprived. Bear with me here as I attempt sentence structure...
(11 babies, 7 eggs left)

Bands/ID. What do you guys like using?
Cluckey did you end up ordering the soft stretchy bands you mentioned the other day somewhere? (It was you , right? Sorry I'm very 🄓 )
I like the little zip ties, sort of, that I'm using however I realize that I will not have enough of the colors I need as all these babies grow. I've usually had such a variety of birds that I always knew who was who because rarely was there more than 5 of any given breed.

As I descend into true poultry madness I realize I'm going to need an ID system going forward.

Our two bantam cochin babies from the first part of our staggered incubation. :love

Meet Ren and Rey...:D

@SnapdragonQ
Batch just hatched came from Meyers. I was initially worried about them because they had more porous shells than I like. However, they were packed excellently and had minimal aircell problems upon delivery. I didn't set or hatch them vertically.

This current batch of shipped eggs came from someone on this site selling Cream Legbar eggs. They were packed decently but really poorly handled in the mail. One broken egg and almost every single egg that wasn't crushed had aircell problems. I am incubating these upright and will likely hatch them that way too should they develop. Not too hopeful about these guys. Though their eggshells are perfect, not too many pores and quite strong. I guess we shall see. These are all due on July 4-5th.

So far I haven’t needed to band many birds because we don’t have a lot that look alike, but I’ve been using zip ties. We only have black zip ties, so I use mini pony beads for different colors. They fit right on the zip ties without being too bulky. Doesn’t work so well when they’re little, but once the birds are bigger it’s fine. You could also double up on the zip ties so some birds have more than one.

Also it can dry on the pip hole causing the chick to not be able to get sufficient oxygen.

I think that was what I saw happening that night. I did pull it off and turned it so the pip was up.

I did open it a bit more this morning. It is malpositioned like i thought. the feet are not where they are supposed to be. But I can't see the yolk sack from how it is positioned. I didn't clear out much of the shell and membrane as it had a large red vein in it so I stopped as soon as I saw that.

But it did survive the night and its breathing is more noticeable. I

Should I be putting cocounut oil on it being as it is already so wet or leave it alone for now?

Did you see my original post. I think it’s sticky chick which is why it’s malpositioned. I’d put it in a cup so it can’t be rolled and add coconut oil to the air cell membrane so you can keep an eye on that to know when to assist. Monitoring the vessels is important. I don’t always hear sticky chicks struggle.... so you just have to go in when the membrane clears.

I'm not sure if someone already responded to this. I'm really late but it may have ruptured the yolk sac. I've never seen this myself but it's the only thing coming to mind. Fingers crossed for the little one. I'm not sure what to tell you to expect if it is.
The good news is I don't think it was the yolk. I don't see any remains of the sack with how it is positioned. Its head is between the wings and the feet are not visable nor is that whole part of the body at the moment. I didn't do much messing around with it as there was a single big red vein in the membrane I could see and I didn't want to acciently break that open.

It is very wet in there I did try to wipe away as much as i could get out. Both last night and this morning. The breathing is much better and it even cheeped at me today. Now i am left with the delinma of to apply oil right now or not because i am worried abotu adding more moisture to the egg at this point.
