June Hatch-A-Long

Most people think it’s my kid, and that he is a girl. I take ZERO offense and don’t correct anyone.

it doesn’t help that we let him be a little hippie and he hasnt had a haircut yet. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

so..... my husband is NOT a country guy. This path in our lives is all me. He loves Dolly Parton, so...... I let him name the babies I want him to like. 😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬we have a Jolene, Dolly, Jackson and Joshua... all Dolly song references.

@SnapdragonQ i don’t know much about genetics but.....

the blue gene is a diluter. Just like the cream gene in horses. However, it only works on black or black based birds unlike the cream gene that works on black and red based horses.

The gene is separate from black. So whether they have a dominant black doesn’t matter. If they’re going to show black, they can be affected by the blue dilution.

one blue copy is blue, and two is splash. Just like one cream gene on a red horse is palomino and two is cremello.
That’s amazing!!! Hahah I love it!! :love

Help with temps!!

I’m having a really hard time regulating the temperature in my incubator today with the warmer weather. (We don’t have AC here in our UK farmhouse.)

ive had to adjust the thermostat down to 36.8C because the calibrated thermometersI’ve got in there were both reading 38C.

It’s forced air, so my target temp is 37.5.

ahould I give the eggs a little “cool down” time for 15-20 minutes? Or just keep an eye on the temps and adjust it down more if I need to?

I grew up listening to Dolly and remember ....was it...the Dolly Parton show?? (um, it's been a few years) I don't live too terribly far from Dollywood either.

I knew you guys had a son, but figured Jolene might have been a daughter we just hadn't seen pictures of yet. And that's cool hubby is supportive, even if it's in a more hands off kind of way. I don't have one anymore, but mine would not have been supportive in any kind of way even though it's in the very heart of who I am and how I grew up.
(Gee...can you guess why I don't have a hubby anymore...)
At any rate....Jolene has lovebug written all over her! :love

I still find all this coloring info interesting and I'm glad you brought up horses. While I used to be very into it when I was younger (ish) and worked in the field, I'm super rusty on horse genetics, especially some of the newer colors that have become more widely known in the last 20 years.

Interestingly enough my buckskin is in question as to if it's really a champagne...or something strange. He's got one of the champagne markers, an eye (no, not both) and I haven't gotten around to sending off a few mane hairs yet for testing.

Anyway, so I could expect my blue and black mix chicks both to be able to give blue genes down the line? Since the moms are blue or have blue.

@SnapdragonQ! Murray McMurray is starting to add breeds on their website for their July 13th ship date. Check a few times a day if you can. They may or may not add the Bielefelders and/or SS, these were not added until Monday and over the week-end last time, but you never know!
Thank you!
I will keep following those. I saw they had a few male Bieles yesterday but nothing else I had to have. I did break down and ordered some Biele eggs yesterday and if they arrive in a mess I might retry with live chicks.

🥰🥰

you read them all correctly. Lol.

Jolene is spoiled rotten but not in a bad way. She is huge love bug and so so so so chill.

the goslings made it today! I’ll put a photo soon!
I have a Jolene and Dolly too 😂 One is a chicken and one is my puppy. Named after Dolly Parton and her song Jolene... and yes we sing it to our puppy all the time.

This one is a keeper for me (if it’s a pullet, which most keepers are luckily) No idea what breed it is or what egg it came from, but it’s the only one like it.

Think I’ll name her Sookie. Oh yes, I’m doing True Blood names this time.

I LOVE BUCKSKINS!!!!

my mom has a champagne. Her name naturally is Mimosa. 🤣

yes! If you see blue it can give blue!

Black x black = 100% black
Blue x black = 50% blue, 50% black
Blue x blue = 25% black, 50% blue, 25% splash
Black X splash = 100% blue
Blue x splash = 50% blue, 50% splash
Splash x splash = 100 % splash.

And I ended up buying chicken leg clips (plastic snap on bands). They come Saturday so I’ll be marking all mine one color and coloring our holds we have with a few customers.

I ordered some of the soft chick bands because mine are growing so fast that I've already had to change a few mini zip ties after just 5 days. I plan to get some clips when what
I want is back in stock. Would like to hear what you think of your clip ons when they arrive.

This is what I ordered. It’s only to separate them for a few weeks not indefinitely. I’ll take them off an reuse them.
