June Hatch-A-Long

Okey dokey, they are here.
Good thing I followed my not so good feeling when it was 1 and the mail lady still had not come up to the house. ...got in the car and drove down (I have steep loooooong driveway) and sure enough...poor eggs were shoved in the mailbox...and on their sides despite the box being clearly marked everywhere ....in neon orange no less! :he

Thank goodness it's been somewhat shady today and the box was not hot!

11 eggs and a gentle quick peek with a less than bright light, has a small crack in one, probably fixable with liquid bandage or wax, and no rolling air cells. I don't know what scrambled looks like.
Most were jiggly and quite a few were saddled, though not horribly. However with the air cells still being small who knows how the saddles will grow over the 21 days. I just don't have the experience yet to know.

The eggs are smaller than I anticipated, which is good, and a tad oblong. Because of their shape and size they will be easier to keep upright if need be. They are resting now and I plan a proper candle, seal cracks, and maybe getting weights right before I set them.

Do jigglies re-attach if propped upright for a few days? How do saddles do on their sides?
argh! Postal service!

the part that’s awful about shipped eggs is you can’t see scrambled yolks. :(

really saddled cells I am not certain of with sideways hatching. Jiggly ones are fine. Just jiggly ones should solidify by 7 ish days as the air cell grows.

Looking for advice...tomorrow is meant to be lockdown (day 17 today), but the air cells haven’t grown much since I candled them at day 14. I’ve kept humidity low (around 30%) since day 14...but not sure if there’s anything else I can do to let the air cell get larger before they hatch?

should I wait to lockdown until day 19? Or is that too late?

Oh my gosh! What is wrong with the postal service!

In a terribly scrambled egg the yolk will no longer be rounded. My goose eggs were so bad that the yolks were a streak in a couple of them but like jolenesdad said, sometimes you can't tell unless you open the eggs that don't develop.

I still put my saddled and mildly detached air cell eggs on their side. I think "jiggly" is the mildly detached air cell.

You can stop turning the eggs and just wait to increase humidity until day 19-20 or when you see an external pip.

Just candled the Bielefelder eggs and all have development! Air cells are on track and not irregular! So happy after the legbar egg incident. Only three legbar eggs left out of 22.

Also received my Creveceour eggs today and they are also beautiful not a single air cell issue.

I will say that on the legbar eggs I tried to set them for five days upright with minimal turning. The air cells were still really wonky. So I went ahead and set them on their sides in my Nurture Right 360 and viola some of the aircells finally attached. Maybe timing maybe the NR is just a better incubator for eggs when they are placed on their sides. The Biele eggs were put in on their sides from the get go and all are doing well. But maybe apples to oranges because the Biele eggs were packaged better and didn't suffer problems in shipping.

Yay for the Biele development!! :ya And thanks for the feedback on putting them directly onto their sides. I know I asked already and you said a few saddles air cells..... but do you remember if you your Bieles had any jiggly or semi-jiggly air cells too?
(sorry to be a pest...nervous nellie here)

And I would have to agree that the Bieles were packed very well! I have one crack that I think I can seal up ok.

Thank you!

You and Brett are the best hand holders. :love:love

Wow I’ve missed a lot! Haha. Just checking in. Kept my junglefowl and hedemora and the 2 older sebrights. Sold the d’uccles. Hatched 3 eggs for a friend, supposed to be “Brahma, Orpington, or ameracauna” mixes. Imagine my surprise when I got this:

it does have feathered legs. xD
the quail are due in a week, had 6 clears and the other 17 look good. Just set golden crele legbars, ice cream bars, and salmon faverolles a few days ago for the July hatch a long. Fingers crossed those do ok. I’ll read back through the *18* pages I need to get caught up on later. 🤣
