June Hatch-A-Long

Pics
ERMAHGERD....I've got little spidery embryos y'all!!
Lots and lots of little red spidery babies to be... :ya :wee:celebrate

Of 22 eggs-
18 were clearly veined, most with tiny blobs.
2 were super thick and spotty shelled. I think I saw veins but not quite sure yet. (SG hen #1)
2 were...I dunno, hard to see anything. Smooth but also a thicker shell (SG hen #2)
Each egg has it's own ID and detailed notes beginning from the day it was laid. 🤓

Ok, guys...how the heck do you-
Hold the camera, get the camera to focus, block the escaping light from around the edges, not drop the egg, and take a picture all at once??
I tried to get a few candle shots, but there has to be a better way!

All you lucky peeps that have access to Sebastopols to start with... lol. I was trying to source some and the closest were in BC. I’m in Ontario. That’s a little far to ship day old babies, in my opinion... :( halfway across the country...
Not sure about getting them across the border (I know I can get roses from Toronto Canada) but I know of a lady in western New York who has/had Sebastopols. I don't know if she ships eggs or chicks, but I know she used to hatch and sell quite a few of them. If you think it's possible to get them across the border PM me and I'll let you know how to find her on FB.
She has other animals and a little fiber shop in the town where she lives.

I loved my BCM and Welsummers! I used to have a larger farm and much more space for all kinds of poultry. Good think I did NOT have an incubator then!!

I hatched out some copper marans for the Easter HAL, I sold 2 pullets to my neighbor that really wanted 2 (I wanted to keep 2....but figured if I could sell them, then I had an excuse to hatch more. Lol!) I let her pick her 2 and the one that got to stay with me is the absolute sweetest little pullet! She loves attention and always wants to be pet or held! I have never had a chicken that likes to be handled as much as her! Then one of the cockerels also likes attention. He is going to be a ladies man as he is already strutting his stuff and showing off for the girls at only 6 weeks old. I can't wait to see if the next hatch of BCM is that friendly!

I drove hours for my first hatch of Sebastopols and this time I'm having them shipped to me. Fingers crossed because shipping is hard on eggs in general but these are big eggs and they gave quite the hike to get to me too.

Neck strap for the camera, get it ready to take pictures before you start candling and I always keep a nice soft towel in front of the incubator to place the eggs so there aren't any mishaps with them rolling away.

That’s for sure closer than BC. Haha. I’ll look into requirements for importing them and see; I’ll reach out to you if it looks doable. :) although with the border still closed I probably wouldn’t be looking to go that route until next spring anyways... :(

If I could make a trip and pick them up that would definitely be preferable. :) I don’t know about a week long drive to bring them back though. And again right now with the pandemic, they really don’t want us travelling out of province... Haha. Fingers crossed for you that your eggs make it ok and you wind up with adorable honkers!🤞😁

🎶Oops I did it again🎶 I sat some more eggs, got lost in the hatch🎶 oh baby baby🎶
Yea I have a problem clearly. So last month we had a total of 17 healthy babies hatch and are now happy in the brooder. Then I may or may not have set another 30 eggs to see what kind of baby's my new roo Butters (White Rock x BO) over my BO, Australorp, RIR, and SLW will produce. View attachment 2160968
On a positive note I sold 6 babies in the brooder bringing the number down to 11. On a less positive note yesterday my neighbors dog killed 4 of my young birds as they were going in to roost. All the birds lost were my kids personal favorite birds and we lost our little cockerel Dos. He was turning into such a beautiful little boy despite being a franken baby I wish I had gotten more pics of him before he'd been killed.

So sorry for the loss of your birds. It's always the favorites that seem to get attacked. :(

Hello I'm new to incubating, this will be my second attempt first one failed horribly, started my 24 eggs on May 13th so Im on day #13 now and making huge progress this time :) have had only 3 quitters so far and the one egg i thought had no hopes is growing strong despite a hole in the shell , plus I have one huge eggy that might be twins or maybe I'm crazy lol

When you figure it out, let me know 😂 I can manage the egg and light with one hand, but my phone camera almost always refuses to focus long enough to take a picture worth sharing. Just a blurry blob.

Hatch day is the 1st for me, so I'm just happy that they are all still going (and apparently some are having a disco party). Just a few more days to lockdown!
