June Hatch-A-Long

2nd bantam Brahma out... now waiting for whatever is in the brown egg.

My observations of hatching in the turner, so far...

1) Chicks hatch smoother. No malposition or wrong end pips.

2) Cleaner

3) No string connections left between the chicks and eggs

4) Chicks are overall cleaner

5) Chicks are more active

6) Legs are stronger

My 5th and final june chick hatched today from the wrong end. First to have this much hanging off it as well

That one is a mottled Java.

I did it in last years June hatch a long with 25 duck eggs. It was a nightmare... I know so many people like it but I’ll never do it again. I had multiple malpositions and bottom pips.

I don’t like when people compare a broody to incubation (like “don’t worry about humidity because a broody doesnt”), because you’re comparing natural incubation and artificial. However, watching a broody hatch chicks she plays soccer with them ten times more than chicks hatching in the incubator.

i tried it because I read that you should hatch an egg the way it was incubated (upright or horizontal) and that made lots of sense to me. I still like the idea of it but I’m not into trying it after such a failure. Now I incubate everything on their side except horrible air cells. Those go on their side at day 14 or so.

Y’all my psycho broody is even worse. Last night I went to check on everyone. This b%#*? Got off of her ceramic eggs I put under her and came running for t all puffed up in a ball. She then stood to the side by herself clucking and clucking for her babies.

I said “yeah they’re not coming because you killed them”

I swear. Chickens are funny sometimes. I probably should not have locked her in cause she is my alpha anyway, no one messes with her. Last year I specifically remember her off the nest during external pips and even a zip. Wonder if she just got freaked out.

So with hatching in the turner, do the chicks not get stuck in the little holes the eggs sit in? I have done the carton method and there didn't seem to be much room for the chicks once they hatched. But that was also doing it with over 30 eggs to hatch.

No matter what I do, every hatch I have overachivers. So lockdown was yesterday we made it to 17 eggs. This morning one baby out and chirping one drowned in its shell??? and 2 more external pips. I've never had such a white baby hatch and of course it hid just as I tried to take pictures....brat.

Buffie and Scruffie are setting five duck eggs apiece. I have also ordered a box of pekins to graft onto these broodies. I am not optimistic of the fertility of those eggs after watching the drakes in action.

I thought the same of my gander. His technique seemed appallingly inaccurate. Imagine my shock when every. single. egg. at least began to develop. I hatched eight of the eleven and gave them back to the geese. What do I know about that kind of goose business? Apparently not much!
