June Hatch-A-Long

I thought the same of my gander. His technique seemed appallingly inaccurate. Imagine my shock when every. single. egg. at least began to develop. I hatched eight of the eleven and gave them back to the geese. :gig What do I know about that kind of goose business? Apparently not much!
But I have not seen any successful...erm...coverings. They don't have Bluetooth fertilizations.

Had a chick hatch upright in the turner. There wasn’t much mess left behind. Another is zipping. The other is externally. Think I said I had 4 eggs but I was wrong. Only 3... forgive my miscounting 😂

I believe I’ve found my new hatching method.

I inadvertently joined you in the hatching in the turner method... When I finally got the crushed broody egg hatched, guinea eggs were at day 24. I wanted to take them out of the turner, but one was already externally pipped! So I just left the 38 eggs as they were, sitting upright in the unplugged turner. Unfortunately, it’s not working out well for me, as the keets keep getting wedged upside down in the space between the turner and wall of the incubator.:th

I just locked down the first 4 eggs in my staggered incubation. They're on day 18, and the others are on day 10. Here's what we ended up doing. We cut the bottoms out of the carton, and have the little plastic cup in there to keep one side higher, simulating the automatic turner. Should I be doing anything more or differently? I didn't set out to do this staggered hatch, but my shipped eggs came in at way different times. :hmm

Hoping the carton doesn't affect the humidity for the 4 in lock down by blocking the wells. I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on it and adjust accordingly. :)

Hmmm weird. I made sure that my turner rails were flat. I think it’s best to be there when they’re hatching. I don’t leave chicks in the bator. I never have. They go instantly into the brooder.

ETA: I usually set eggs to hatch on weekends when everyone is home

Spent this morning doing storm assessment around the farm. Had a nice micro burst hit around midnight. Blew our window well cover off and shattered it and did a number on our (3 month old) trampoline. It also broke 2 power line poles in our tree row just to the east of our house. Some people down the road had a pivot flipped and huge 8 ft diameter 8 foot tall empty fertilizer tanks blown off their foundations and across the field. I'm sick of all the wind we have gotten lately. Saturday and Sunday were sustained 40+ mph winds with gusts up to 70 and then last nights micro burst. Windy and raining today....and cold for June. I had a feeling the summer weather was going to be a lot like it was last year.....and it is definitely starting that way. :hit

Oh....and pheasant eggs are in the hatcher for lockdown. Not 100%sure what day they are on, but I know they are close. Candled them before I set them in the hatcher and think I may have 1 late quitter as the veins didn't look quite right. The remaining 14 all looked great! FIL is working hard on getting the hoop coop finished for them. (And it should not blow away....unless it gets caught in a tornado. That thing is HEAVY! He built the frame out of 2 and 4 inch oil field pipe.)

Hi guys! I’m new to hatching and BYC. I’m like a first time mum with eggs in my incubator! I needed a place to share my chicken excitement because even my husband and kids aren’t as excited as I am about our new chicken family! I haven’t felt this nervous since I was trying for a baby/pregnant for the first time!

I’ve got 5 speckled Sussex eggs from eBay, 5 Brahma (3 light 2 silver) from a local poultry farmer, and 6 buff Orpington from eBay. They were set Friday morning, I quickly candled the eggs without moving them from the incubator this morning (it’s only day 4/96 hours so I didn’t want to turn them over or anything).

it looks like we’ve got maybe 3-4 fertile buff Orpington (1 looks like it has a blood ring but I will wait and see), all 5 Sussex are fertile, and 4 Brahma (2 of each colour). So probably 11-12viable eggs so far! Really happy! 😃

anyone else incubating/hatching for the first time?
Day 21 is 26th June 🤞
