June Hatch-A-Long

I candle mine every night until I see internal pips. Then I say "Oh $h1t!," and start getting the brooder ready (after I take out the turner and pour some warm water into the 'bator.) :lau
Hahaha I candle them even when they are externally pipped. I do not recommend new people to do this though because some take that advice to the extreme and their chicks die then they blame you... This happened when I talked about dry incubating. Someone took it upon themselves to say "We told them to do it" when we were having a conversation about what I do and I never gave advice to them :barnie

Last night when I candled going into lockdown, I penciled the 18 day air cell line.
This morning when I shined a light through the outside of the bator into the eggs it looked like a few of the air cells had drawn in another 1/8 to 1/4 inch past the lines that I drew last night. These are also the more wiggly eggs.
Could this be the start of drawn down on those eggs?

All of the eggs have a slight variation on the lines from last night, but not nearly as dramatic as these four.
They will draw down a lot, but it could be a start of it.

I've read that with at least some breeds the blue hue goes all the way through. Olive happens when brown is layered on over blue, with the shade dependent of the intensity of the blue and the brown.

I'm not sure this is always the mechanism, though, as in the Whiting "true blue" and "true green" breeds of layers. Each of these breeds will breed true for blue or green eggs (assuming hen and rooster are of the same breed), but both breeds have varying plumage in color and growth patterns (such as beards). Murray McMurray carries them.

Chicks I am noticing are much louder than ducklings. My bator is very noisy and only has one chick in it. Verses when I had 4 ducklings in the incubator it was almost silent.
If you have only one chick, it's gonna be noisy. I hear mirrors are comforting to the lonely chick, and small stuffed toys. The other thing that makes any number of chicks noisy is constant light (as from a heat lamp). A dark reptile heat bulb or infrared brooder plate (or homemade mama hen heating pad) Will give you quiet chicks, ime.

Just got a notification that the chicks I ordered went out of Iowa this afternoon. USPS is showing the shipment isn't expected until MONDAY! :th

However I've ordered from this hatchery before and it normally only takes 2 days, max.
Trying the breathe and relax here.....

It may take longer because the USPS appears to be taking the opportunity of the CV-19 thing to put their collective feet up on the coffee table and do an even poopier job than usual, but ime the accuracy of the tracking info (not the delivery time) has been the problem in the past. All my chicks have come ahead of schedule. Hope yours do, too! :fl
