June Hatch-A-Long

After changing my chick order I think 5 times (the nice ladies in the hatchery office were VERY patient with me), I have decided on cuckoo marans, bielefelder, blue laced red Wyandotte and speckled Sussex. I have ordered enough for friends too and will sell any left over. My current incubating eggs are not doing so well this time around, I had blood rings in all of the batches: ONE self blue ameraucana looks good, ONE birchen marans looks good, 4 of the silver laced orpingtons look good and now 3 of the grocery store eggs look good! So far the grocery store eggs are looking the best which I actually find quite funny!🤣😂😊
You sound like me when I order chicks from our local farm. I didn’t do it this year because I could hatch my own. I think I changed my order a few times before I told myself I need to stop charging my mind

Yay!
Which hatchery did you find actually had these chicks? Everywhere I've looked Bieles and SS are out.

Oh! Pretty please?! I'd love to see him.
There are colors I like more than others and I don't mind some black in my flock. However I do like a colorful flock and am working to get towards the flock I had before I moved the farm. Pretty sure I had one of every color or type, but I had to reduce drastically for the move.

I would have never thought a black roo could be so stunning and beautiful so am surprised mine is. So much so that I am thinking of quilting him.
Well, not him, but an art quilt in the likeness of him.
...if he doesn't turn mean that is.
My BJG was stunning but he didn’t fit into our flock. Way too big for the girls and tore their backs up pretty bad. They have all their back feathers back after about 1.5 months of him being gone. I’m still getting his offspring though because my friend has him 😁

YES!!

Is black always dominant?
I got 7 silver (grey, blue...whatever they are called when still fuzzy) chicks from my hatch. A Black Australorp is the daddy of all the chicks and the moms of the silvers are 1 Americana and 3 different Sapphire Gems.
Does that mean my roo only has one black gene?

He's inky black with the green sheen and in certain light a purple sheen.
I am no expert in genetics, but I believe that black can carry recessive genes for other colors, example is the self blue or lavender color which is two copies of the recessive gene. It is recessive to black and a black bird can carry the gene for the self blue (which actually looks like a pale silver color), so that the bird looks black but when bred to self blue or other similar black birds can produce the self blue. Sounds confusing, but kind of like brown eye/blue eye genetics.:)

It is Murray McMurray and you have to keep checking their availability on the website. Click the "available now" button. They literally update this information several times a day, so you think they are out of something and then suddenly they have it. I jumped on the Bielefelders and then adjusted my order over the phone. It looks like they add breeds exactly 3 weeks out from the ship date, so checking the week-end before. They literally sold out while I was ordering, so best to order online and then call them later to make any changes. The Bielefelders were posted after office hours last night and are already sold out for that ship date (July 6 week). The website is user friendly and you can even cancel orders online if you change your mind. I ordered the Bielefelders after hours and then called them this morning to combine with a previous order I had (for the same date). They have free shipping right now and minimum order of 15 chicks. I paid for expedited shipping as I live in Hawaii and want to get the chicks here as soon as possible. Good luck! :)

@jolenesdad I actually got a new broody to take the chicks without killing them and so far she is being a kind mom :fl The bantam brahma has a chick as well and she is behaving as well. My white cochin (chicken little) has no chicks yet. Jerky the jerkface Turkey decided he was going to attack her while I held her to check her eggs. I was trying to get all the duck eggs in one nesting box. That little turkey is most likely going to become Thanksgiving if it doesn't knock it off! The other day he tried to pick on my Bantam Brahma (not the broody one) and she flipped a lid, jumped right on his back and would not let go of his neck :lau I laughed for a bit before I helped him.
