Hey all! Candled my 22 Legbar eggs and out of 22, one showed development six days in. *Sigh* I threw out the clears that *still* had unattached air cells and put back eight more that had okay air cells and looked like there might be some development.

Good thing I got backups!

My Bielefelder eggs arrived in great shape. I ordered a guaranteed 10 and received 11. Air cells were all attached albeit a little saddled. They were double boxed and the eggs were set in sawdust and individually wrapped in bubble wrap. Quite impressive to this egg shipping noob. After 24 hours of upright resting they have taken the now vacant places and I am happy I thought ahead.

I was all about Palominos as a kid thanks to the the The Silver Brumby. I grew up with a bay and gray. Now I really like anything but bay....dilutions of bay are fine but bay itself is boring to me. If I had my choice I would love a chestnut. But let's be honest if I could have a horse where I currently live I would not let color deter me.

Thanks guys. My husband is opposed to them being in the house at all. But I just don’t feel comfortable not having them in sight for the first few days.

I've never kept them in the living area of the house. Mine go in the garage which in winter, we heat enough to be comfortable in a jacket since we're out there a lot. I wouldn't really want them inside.

I made lids for the brooder bins by cutting out along the indents on the edges and covering the hole with hardware cloth, screwed on with metal roofing screws and additional larger washers. I keep the chicks inside longer than a couple weeks in the winter & "spring" (which lately has been tricky to tell any difference from winter). They could go out, but it's just easier for me this way.

I cannot wait until we can move to a place that has a garage and a barn because that is where mine will be. Right now they are in the spare bedroom only for less than a week and I put them in the shed in the huge brooder after that. Right now I have a few that have been in here for a week because I need them to be banded so I can identify my keepers and one of my customers pre ordered chicks. They want me to hold them for a few weeks (I do not mind this customer because they have a legitimate reason) They are building their big coop and it has been nonstop rain. I am patient. Plus if they do not get these, they will sell quite quick since they are a gorgeous cross.

Oh, and I've been meaning to ask...why not just take a stroll down along the beach and nab you a chicken or two... They sure were colorful when I was there.

Yes we have feral chickens, descended form imported jungle fowl from the last century and random chickens gone wild! We have two mammas with chicks (we call them "kitty snacks" here as the feral cats usually get most of them) wondering our yard right now. I do not feed them, as I do not want to encourage them to hang around. We have tried to raise chicks we have caught in the past, but they are really wild and flighty and never became tame.
Some of the roosters are stunning, they are a bit smaller then domestic chickens and eggs are a bit smaller, too.

Mine are still in the living room at 3 weeks of age! Still waiting for that coop to be completed... Putting then outside in a portable pen during the day when I can keep an eye on them. They LOVE being outside!

Pulled out 4 eggs that were 2 days late... One had a live chick in it. The membrane was a bit stuck to it, I think its because it had externally pipped and the membrane dried. I put triple antibiotic ointment on the dried on membrane, it came off easily once lubricated. The BCM is in the brooder now. The other 3 were half developed, but I could not tell so I just left them in until it was 48 hours after day 21.

Did you order your Bieles off ebay? I did and it's my first set of ordered eggs, they are due next week.
I've got everything crossed they arrive well packed and in good shape because live chicks...if one can find them... are ridiculously expensive!
