June Hatch-A-Long

So one of the two remaining Orpington eggs stopped moving for a while so thought it was time to intervene. Opened that one first and the chick is dead, fully formed looks like it was ready to go, not sure what happened at the end. Second chick I could still hear peeping so I went ahead and made a hole and peeled away some of the shell until I could see her beak, stuck her back in the incubator with a wet paper towel and will keep a close eye on her.😊

OK, lesson learned. There IS a reason they are not able to PIP! I am NOT doing this again.
The dead chick looks completely normal. Normal beak, I can not see what went wrong there. The surviving chick in the incubator (previous post) has a pretty severe cross beak as far as I can tell. Probably will not be able to hatch on it's own. Considering letting it just expire in there without further assistance. That may sound cruel, but I do not know how well chicks with cross beaks do in life. Any one with experience?:(

Ok now I'm reading that these chicks can survive! Uhg, such a dilemma for me! I work in the medical field, so hard for me to just let it go, and I am a vegetarian and do not even kill bugs! No judgement whatsoever for those who eat meat (the rest of my family does and I love them anyway...) and swat flies. I have been known to wipe up ants off the counter and kill an occasional cockroach (I usually catch them and put them outside, along with spiders and other crawlies). I understand that chicks need to be culled for different reasons and as someone who is hatching eggs, needs to be able to do that, but it just has not come up yet!
😭

I would cull a cross beak. People have had some survive, but honestly I wonder about quality of life. Just because it’s alive doesn’t mean it’s happy.

I am 100% plant based. I’m a vegan butcher... for real

That’s super cool you’re a vegan butcher! I love it! I cook meat for the family so I’m not one of those vegetarians that’s trying to preach to other people.
😊
Still undecided what to do with this chick. I guess if I don’t make a decision that is also a decision.🤣

I wasn’t meant to be having any more chicks hatch in June and well...I’m not...these are someone else’s eggs! 😅

We got a message from someone we know that lives around 10 mins away from us. They were asking for advice as it was their first time hatching.

Only two of the eggs under the broody were fertile and today was hatch day. Except when they started to hatch, broody hen got a bit carried away and started pecking at the pips until they started to bleed.

Of course, I said the best thing in that situation is to take the eggs off the broody and put them in an incubator otherwise since the chicks haven’t fully retracted the veins and mammy hen is making them bleed, they could die.

Only thing is she didn’t have an incubator.

So, we went over to pick the two eggs up, one with it’s beak poking out and a bloody hole on it, the other with just a pip.

They had a 10 minute journey and I’ve popped them in the incubator at mine.

They are both alive and chirping, will leave them alone until tomorrow and see where to go from there. Keeping my fingers crossed for these two chicks 🤞🏻

I usually cook plant based meals then add meat for everyone else. I just make sure mine is separate
