June Hatch a Long

My thermometers vary also. The one that came with the bator that lays on the eggs stays pretty much at 99.5. The meat termometer I put inside stays about 2 deg cooler. The one an top the bator is all over the place but usually low. I assume the variance is normal because of type differences. I am going in to town today and will probably pick up a cheapie one that is similar to the one that came with the unit and see if that registers the same.

The air cell will be at the top, fat end. Yes you should see the air cell on day 5. And some veining. Here is a link to candling pictures.

PS we like freaking people out!

Pics on the link are awesome. Problem is I could not resist after seeing them.... had to check a couple more eggs. I can see the little dot in the center on most of the ones I checked and some veining on all. The eggs are brown and I don't think I have a strong enough light. Thanks again for the link.

I had this a lot when I 1st started. On good advice, I bought thermometers that could be calibrated. And I try to remember to do it before each hatch. Running too low can cause a delayed hatch and weak chicks. Running too high can cause and early hatch and weak chicks. Anything over 104 for a period of time, will kill chicks. On a still air (no fan) temp should read 101.5 (or close) at top and 99.5 at bottom. Still air incubators have spots of temperature variance. They say the best id to get a thermometer with a probe and place it is a small jar of water. This will be close to what the internal temp is on an egg.

I ended up buying a thermometer/hygrometer set from petsmart, which was marketed for reptiles. They seem to work amazingly well! Have had pretty nice hatches since I got them Before that I had a digital thermometer and HATED it. I think the set I bought cost something like $15, so it was a good, cheap investment

Hi all!! Guess I fit better over in the June hatch thread since mine are due 6/6.This is my first attempt and the the May hatch folks are starting to freak me out. LOL!! Turned eggs this A.M and could not resist candling one even though I am only at day 5. Clear at the bottom and what I guess is the yolk/slash embryo floating at the top. Did not see any air pocket. Is that pretty normal?

Hate to break it to ya - but a lot of us just came right on over from the May thread - LOL

At least we are a friendly bunch (and hopefully can be helpful too if needed). Welcome to the hatching addiction - you can't stop with just one attempt!!

13 what? I would love to know what breeds you are trying.

I think SF are one of the very best breeds. I am not sure which breed is my favorite personality wise, but SF sure are up there!

(And thank you so much for telling us what the abbreviations are for!

I want to hatch my own eggs for my first time. I have 3 BA hens 1 RI Red and 1 Barred rock hen, all covered by a BA roo. The BA and Rock eggs look the same so it I am not sure how many of each I have.3 of the eggs are from the RI Red

Are the RI eggs darker brown? Larger?

Love all of the egg differences!

They are darker and more of a redesh brown instead of a light brown. they are about the same size--a tad bigger because she is older.

I received my BBS am eggs today! If my blue splash silkie is still sitting when i get hime, she will be getting some of them. The rest will go in the bator for hatch date of June 11.
