June Hatch a Long

That's the issue. Thick brown shells. I can see growth in all but it's pretty hazy and these old eyes are having a little trouble making out details. Saw that duck video and that was amazing!! Gonna have to configure a better candler for the next time around.
[/quote. Well with really thick or chocolate brown eggs no type of light will pass through you can use 600 or 800 grit sandpaper to sand two lines down the front and back of the egg and then spray with bactine lightly this will allow you to see through the dark eggs and monitor development now that you have done this remember that you have removed the bloom from the outer shell and these eggs need special care with hygiene during the rest of the incubation and hatching period allot of folks who hatch dark coo coo maran and other chocolate egg laying birds use this method to candle do a search on hatching chocolate eggs and you should find info and pictures on the procedure

. Well Dolfi we will try to help as much as we can I am taking a special interest in your hatch you have Coranations set and I am after a good line of them to bring down here I'm a Sussex fan !

Thanks, Rey!! I think for now I am going to wait it out and see what happens. I am so far along I don't want to screw them up any worse than I may already have. Since this is my first hatch, I pretty much assumed that it would be a learning experience for me.

Two things on my list for next time: 1) a thermometer that can be regulated (never could get the two in the bator and the one on top to agree) 2) A better candler so I can see what's going on. Also, I may wire a fan into the bator to get a more consistant temp throughout. Do those run all the time or are they hooked into the theromostat?

Going to put the nine in the bator under the broody tonight and put her two in the bator. I should have chicks by Thursday if any are viable. If not I'll have the two backups she has been tending.

Anyway, this has been fun and everyone very helpful. What a great community!!

[/quote ] well I would not invest in a better coffee can it will do a good job just use a brighter bulb and limit the time the egg spends over the hole so you don't cook it you will also see a little more movement as the embryo will respond to the difference in the heat as you candle as far as for the bator fan it will give you up to a 30% increase in hatch rates typically ,, the fan runs constantly and moves air up off the top of the bator not down this gives it good dispersion with minimal draft a computer case fan is ideal BUT you need to tame it down in rpm this can be accomplished by not running the fan at it's rated 12v dc and bump the voltage down to 9v dc this will slow it down to a good click I use a old 9v cell phone charger as I seem to have a endless supply in a drawer of old phones lol good luck with it

Yep, got the cord and the fan all ready from when I was going to diy a bator. I have a 75 watt bulb in the can now but since I only had 1 lb cans I had to stack two together. It may be that it puts the egg too far from the light. I am afraid to put a 100 watt in. May get breakfast with a little extra protein in it!! LOL!!

I have a home made 15x15 box made from particle board with a 1 1/4 hole on the side not the top and use a rubber O ring around the hole for a seal a 100 w bulb it does a good job on just about all the eggs I hatch I also use a super bright led flash light for quick peeks at bator side I'll put up a pic of my candle box later

Good morning,

I have looked in search and become impatient trying to find an answer.

Can anyone give me information on the problems setting pullet eggs.
The last shipped eggs I received are very small..............certain they are pullets.............
Thank you, Tanya

That may be part of my part of the problem. I only have a 3/4" hole. I have the lens surround off an old flashlight that is flexible for a seal. I will modify before I spend any money.
