June Hatch a Long

Ok I went and counted, what has hatched

5 Sex Links All male (1 G/S 4 Black)
4 WL (1 DIS 1/2 zipped but died)
3 BA
2 BR

No partidge in a pair tree though. But 20 keets hatched and more pipping. 4-5 are either mostly buff or less than 50% chipmunky. So 75% pearl grays and possibly 25% pearl whites. 23 left unpipped. Almost to 50% and these are the eggs we found on accident and suffered thru frost rain and everything else. And somehow my days were off so they "are" due Tues, not Mon so they started 4 days early. But most are super peppy so no ill effects I can see yet.

Just checked calender. And after this batch have until next Saturday before things get popping again. Wow didn't realize I was gonna let myself relax this much before July. More time to get aquainted with the babies before the next batch. And build more brooder space LOL. Wanna set up something more waterproof for the ducklings I hope are coming.

Worked on the new cabinet incubator today. It should be able to handle 160 eggs in turners, more if I hand turn. It will have 2 hatching drawers, 2 doors on front with plexiglass windows, and the top with plexiglass where you can watch the chicks hatch in the drawers.

So far the cost in $0. Going tomorrow to pick up insulation and plexiglass
i thought that el was the one with the cabinet. LOL

First chick to make an appearance!
400

Congrats on all the new babies, they look adorable.

I can't wait until mine hatch but they are only due 27th of June, such a long time to wait.

I was given a good idea for candling and thought I would share it with you all. If you cut off the top of a plastic soda bottle (like a home made funnel) and cover the outside with a dark tape, pop the egg inside the funnel and shine your torch through the bottle top so the light is concentrated on running through the egg and it is easier to see inside the egg.

Almost done. Went thru eggs yet to try hatching. Chickens done. Have another BA but thats all added to chicken list.
1 more guinea zipping and 1 more possibly via egg. 25 were clear. I check transferring them to hatcher. LOL. Never got a chance to check for LD candle. So whether the last viable hatches will determine 100% guinea hatch or not.

Next set to hatch besides broody guinea eggs are all project chicken eggs, which are more SLCxBO and my Red Project. except a few BSL. same day are 30 guinea and 5 duck eggs. On the 22nd.

After those set for 29th are 16 more guinea and 6 more rouens. Duck eggs are fertile but 1 may have blood ring starting. Wait a couple days to check again. Monday Might be another set day if rouen decides not to set on her nest. But lets deal with June for now.

My first quail egg ever is hatching right now! We have a pip! It is so tiny! Oh I hope it is a girl. I only have two female quail and one male

GL on getting a hen(? if thats what quail are called LOL) do they do better like other poultry with 1 male to multiple females? I thought I read somewhere that optimal was trios for breeding. Maybe not. Always thought of doing quail but where I am you need a lic. to hatch and raise quail, wild game birds. And with my chickens guineas and ducks I am Brooder space poor right now. But poultry rich. Nothing rare or fancy but I think I have great birds. Even down to the male mutts I should be rid of.

I am not sue if they are called hens. I am new to quail too. I was told 4-5 girls to every boy. My son loves the tiny eggs and refuses to let us eat them and cries if I tease him about eating them cuz he knows they can be babies. He is 9and is the sweetest boy ever. He has the kindest heart.

Guineas is one bird that I do not have. I enjoys my ducks chickens quail geese and rabbits right now. I think I have great birds too and they are very well fed and spoiled. I do want to add peacocks and peafowl to my lil farm.
