June Hatch a Long

I set 19 eggs on June 3. My rooster died a couple of days later (we knew he was dying, so I set the last of his viable eggs). When I candled at day 7, there were 7 clears, so I had 12 still there. Yesterday, I took another peek at them, and 3 more have also quit (but they are fairly dark green, so I'm leaving them in there in case I just couldn't see what was going on AND they don't smell). That leaves 9 (or so).

Friday is day 18, so I'll take out the turner, increase the humidity, and keep my fingers crossed. This is my first attempt at hatching, and it was only to try to hatch a new little roo with the personality of his father. Borrowed an incubator, bought a turner. I'm as nervous as a cat with one kitten.

I can see how it can be addicting. Just seeing those little developing chicks swim around in there was a real kick.

My first chick ever just hatched! It is a Crested Cream Legbar. Need to wait till it dries to see if it is a boy or girl. Only 1 out of 7 hatched, but I at least proved to myself that I can hatch eggs!

Thats the 1st step of hatching. My 1st batch was 48. I told the wife "If I hatch 1 I will be happy." well you know how fast she hit the roof. Point was that if I could get 1 to hatch I would be able to do more. Needless to say I had better hatch rate than 1. But my point to myself was made. Anyway that was a few years ago with better shipped eggs. Think it was more or less 50%.

I have about roughly another 1 dz little chipmunks, feathered not furred, running around downstairs. These from my stolen eggs. Another pipping ATM. So far I think the monthly count on keets is gonna be at least 35 ish. From 8 adults, 2 m 6 f. I am more than happy. And still more nest out there.

Ducks ain't turning out as well but with 1 breeding pair, what can I do.

Hope everything goes well and you get a Jr. out of the hatch.
