June Hatch a Long

we now have 8 pips and the 2 zippers have taken a break. but listen to this mess.

yesterday evening someone gave me 8 eggs to incubate now when I got these eggs I just wrapped them in a tee shirt inside of a grocery bag and when I got home put them in my bedroom closet to wait for me to get a carton empty to put them in. well this morning I used the last of the eggs in my fridge so I could use the carton. now I am candling these eggs cause some of them are pretty round and its hard to tell top from bottom to make sure I put them in the cartons right and guess what....... 7 out of these eggs have been developing and they look to be around day 7 or so

. and miraculously..... they are still alive. so I leave them in the carton and hurry them into my spare incubator. looks like I will have and early july hatch too hehe. glad I candled them instead of just sitting them in the cartons. whew...... that was close.

Wow, cool story!

Still counting....30 out of 37 so far! Couldn't be happier with how the hatch has turned out so far. Better results than I expected from my homemade bator and I was worried about some of the eggs being old but its done well. I've moved about 20 to the brooder already and they love the soil. They bypassed the chick starter for the soil. I got regular chick starter and not medicated. Wondering if I should have started them on the medicated. Thoughts?

Well I do have other birds. I collected the soil and sand from an area in my yard but I let my chickens free range sometimes so they do have access to it. The pine straw has definitely been exposed to other birds. My chickens like to go to that area and turn it up when I let them out. I didn't know if this would hurt them by introducing cocchi to them or if it would help by possibly introducing it to them early. My understanding is thats what the feed does and helps them build a resistance up. Im doing more research now.
