I know right. Isn't it the cutest thing. Sure am hoping it is a girl!Oh geez. My iPad skipped a page when I turned it on yesterday. What the heck? Some pretty cool chicks there! The mystery polish I'm thinking, put a cigar in its beak & call him Groucho Marx, lol! So unique! All adorable, of course!![]()
So the little one is still holding on, went out to plant my sunflowers for the chickies this fall, went up to feed the barn chickens... and i lost one :'( strangulation, somehow the dumbass got his head in the bird netting, stuffed it into a square, and then i guess flapped and flapped untill he either broke his neck or suffocated :'( he was a pretty, young cockerel, blue with some gold lace feathers just starting to show through with a creamy breast, i wasnt going to keep him, but i had planned to try to sell him, he was also good natured... dang... i pulled him off plucked him and fed him to the dog, waste not want not![]()

Day 21 hatch day today for me! Nothing but a little rocking in the incubator, but started off with a tragedy in the broody box. Went to check on the girls this morning (I have 2 broodies, one on each egg). One of my broodies was up and asking to come out of the pen (she does this every a.m. Then hope back on the nest after about 20 mins), so I figured no hatching activity. I was wrong. Looked in her box, and there was a squished mass of egg with a little head poking out. I scooped it up right away, figuring it was dead (it was quite cold), but then she gasped! I ran her inside and fired up my Brinsea mini as a hospital incubator (it warms up fast). There is quite a bit of blood and a tiny bit of yolk, so she is obviously early. She was internally pipped yesterday, so I figure she pipped, which weakened the shell, and my inexperienced hen then squished her. As she is warming up, she is breathing a bit faster ( about 5 breaths/min when I first found her, WAY too low). But otherwise limp and motionless. I pulled most of the shell off, as it was broken and bleeding, but left the veins/yolk attached in hopes she will absorb more. I have little hope she will make it, what with squishing, hypothermia, blood loss, and risk of infection, but I have to try! My first Cream Legbar hen. Fight girl! (My last hatch was all cockerels!)
Awwww so sorry to hear that. I had something similar almost happen once. I had a hen reach her neck out the fence to eat something. Apparently she brought her head back in above the link in the chain, panicked and pushed forward again... somehow making an S shape with her neck and the two rows of wire. Thankfully I got her out before I lost her but any longer and she would have been a goner. I thought I was going to break her next when I had to try to get her out! They are smart birds most of the time but they sure can do some dumb things! At least for you, you have your dog.
