June Hatch a Long

Day 22 wrap-up;
Well, so far so good! 7/9 chicks hatched so far. I candled the last 2, and they are still alive, though no signs of hatching (no internal or external pipping). Gotta wait and see! The chicks are looking great, although not fully fluffed yet. Of course the 2 under the broody are the fluffiest and happiest looking . Since they are Cream Legbars, once they are fluffed I can tell the boys from the girls, but I can already tell 2 boys for sure. I will post some pics tomorrow!

I am so upset right now. As in angry, not sad. I put my eggs in lockdown today before leaving for work. This whole time, I have not had to adjust the temp on my LG. I got home from work: temp was 120! Wth is going on? This is the second hatch that has ended up likely cooked, and randomly. No rhyme nor reason to why the temp suddenly jumped.

Grrrrrr.

Bad news the tempurture has been 95 for the past two days I changed the light bulb already to bump up the temperature to 100 I'm so afraid to candle my eggs at this point :'(

I had a broody hen under my porch, who suddenly abanoned her eggs yesterday after brooding them for three weeks. I thought I heard chirping so I crawled under there (sometimes being small is a huge advantage, lol) and fetched out six eggs, two of whom were early quitters and the other four were already externally pipped! Weird stupid broody who abandoned her eggs when they were already hatching. Perhaps she got cold feet? Haha.

Anyways, I stuffed the eggs into the incubator and splashed the whole thing with water. This morning I found one chick perfectly hatched, two more that were half zipped and one that had a foot sticking out of it! I decided to help the one with the foot,it was ready to come out with no veining in the membrane. Chicken got out and all looks good, until a couple of hours later:

This might sound stupid, but at first glance it literally looked as if its head was put on the wrong way. It must have been completely malpositioned in the egg, or it has some sort of weird neurological condition. It constantly keeps its head bent all the way backwards, beak in the air and leaning its head on its back. It's chirping and seeming healthy otherwise, but always sitting in this really weird position with its head on its back. Anyone ever experienced something similar?

I'm getting worried.
This is my second hatch and my first one went so well with everything working against me.

Today is day 20 and only 2 of the 18 that were candled on day 18 and looked great have little pips. I hear a 3rd chirping, but not breaking the shell at all. None of them are rocking around like last time.

I am worried when I took out the automatic egg turner and laid them all on their side I somehow caused them problems.
Also my humidity went way down this morning, not sure why, (It went from 70 to 50 and going down , so I had to open the incubator and put in a wet paper towel and its back around 70.)

Last hatch my heat and humidity ran high and everyone hatched day 18- day 19, now it's day 20 and I don't see much progress. Also day 22 we have to go out of town so I'm starting to panic some are going to end up dying....

going to candle them after work. i hope i messed the count up or something. i spent quite a bit on eggs.

Day 22 and an egg I thought was a quitter has pipped. At the wrong place. I can see him/her working on getting through, and there is a little peeping. The air cell is at the top of the picture, though. I'm afraid this little one will have a hard time of it. Maybe another tiny pip on another egg I had thought had a blood ring a week ago, not sure. Wouldn't that be something if only the ones I thought were dead pipped. Hmmm.

What I wonderful surprise!

Sharol, I just had a wrong -end pipper hatch. The danger is if they pip thru a vein and bleed. Mine had some bleeding, but eventually hatched just fine. It took a little longer, so I opened the pip just a little to make sure it could breathe, then let things go for awhile. She ended up being badly positioned, so I helped her zip too, then she took care of the rest in due time. Don't rush the process too much, or you risk bleeding or hatching with an open umbilicus. Wrong-Enders often hatch just fine as long as they can breathe. Good Luck!!!

If you can watch it VERY closely from now on. Depending on how long that happened they could still be okay.

I'd wait a day and then check. They could still be okay. They can be quite resilient!

Ahhhh hens can be a bit tempermental at times! That can happen to chicks simply because of the position. I'd give it a few days to see if it gets stronger and gets itself right before any decisions are made. Best of luck!

I'm on day 20 as well and no pips at all. It may just be the time of year? Who knows. But I can see movement with everyone so I'm not worried... yet.
