June Hatch-A-Long

I got my eggs! I got tons of extras. I bought 3 dozen but got 47. I have 20 blue black splash ameraucauna, 7 cream legbar, and 20 quail. I set the chicken eggs today. I'm storing the quail eggs for 5 days so they all hatch at once. I put them in a cooler with a frozen water jug wrapped in a towel. People here in AZ use wine coolers to store but I don't want to spend the money. Anyway, so excited and really hope I get a good hatch rate again.

Oh my goodness. This is my first time incubating eggs, and since today is day 7 I just took them out for the first time to candle them. There is movement in several of my eggs, it was such an amazing thing to see! Just a little tiny shadow wiggling around in there. I for sure have 8 developing out of 30, BUT I could not see into a dozen of them to see if they have veins because the shells are so dark, so those are a wait-and-see thing. 4 out of my 12 Trader Joe's Fertile Eggs are developing. Not bad for being setting old, roughly handled eggs!
This is so exciting. I can't wait for hatch day.

I'm so excited for you! I remember my first time incubating eggs. And I still feel the excitement many, many moons later. It's just so awesome seeing new life developing right before your very eyes!

Today is lock down for me. I have to wait until I get home to candle and remove the clears. I checked them a couple of days ago and from what I could see out of 35 eggs there is about 16 eggs that have babies. (I know my hatch rate isn't that great.) Since this is my first time hatching/incubating if for some reason they don't hatch what should I do to see what went wrong?

I am so excited I could almost wet myself! I am hoping that at least one will hatch!
Congratulations! And with regards to the other eggs, if they are clear and just never even started to develop, I doubt there it had to do with anything that you did/didn't do. Just because a roo runs with the hens, that doesn't mean that all of the eggs are fertilized. In saying that, it doesn't mean they aren't either. Sometimes you can do everything right, and still have eggs that don't hatch.
Fingers crossed that you get all 16 (or more!) to hatch successfully.

Today is lockdown for the three lonely little eggs in my Brinsea. I started with 22 eggs that were so scrambled by USPS that most failed to develop at all. Now I have two silkies with saddle cells and 1 little bantam cochin egg. All three were alive and moving yesterday. I'm gonna cross my fingers and pray to the chicken gods that all 3 hatch. Maybe I'll end up with a silkie pair and cochin pullet.

Fingers crossed for you here, too!

I have noticed that to be a theme among many men I have encountered. My boyfriend would complain about how we have to get my 5 year old to stop pitching temper tantrums every time he gets mad. And I explained when a 5 year old boy has temper fits breaking things it's more acceptable than a 30 year old boy doing the same. Something about most boys. They are a lot like the lost boys. They don't want to grow up...lol. still living in neverland.

Okay, I candled last night under the guise of needing to draw air sacs for embryo development observation and to mark saddle air sacs with the plan of assisted hatching for them if need be. I found I have a live embryo in an egg with an air sac on the side of the egg!

Any who, I have news. NONE of my quail eggs are live. Still keeping them in the bator - just to be sure. It is so my fault - think the temp was @ 97-98 degrees most of their cycle. I have 2 sizzles and a splash going strong. Still can't see into the OEs and all but 2 maybe 3 of the Ams are good. I am down to 4 Dels. I have also spotted veining in 5 of the EEs and both of the B.O.s.

Results:
37 quail - 0 live embryos
3 sizzles - 2 embryos
3 splash - 1 embryo
4 OEs - ????
1 White silkie egg - 0
12 Ams - 9-12 embryos
15 dels - 4 embryos
7 EEs - ( still have 15 days to go) 5 embryos
2 B.Os - (also 15 days to go) 2 embryos

Total:

Started with 84 eggs total - Eggs with embryos 19 - 26

Sizzles, splash silkies, OEs, and AMs go into lockdown on 6/3 and Dels go in on 6/6
EEs and B.Os go in on 6/12

that's rough. Lots of eggs not too many embryos. Maybe what is going will all hatch

Good luck on all of your June hatches, everyone!

I got a call from the post office early this morning saying my Narragansett turkey eggs had arrived! I wasn't expecting them until tomorrow, so this is great news! All of the eggs are intact and currently sitting upright for the next 24 hours, then tomorrow they will go into the incubators. That means I'm looking at a hatch date of around the 27th...and technically still a June Hatch-A-Long.

The 100+ quail eggs go on lock down this coming Monday, and the Silkie and Mille Fleur d'Uccle bantams that are under a broody are due to hatch the following Monday. I've never had quail or the Belgian d'Uccles before (or Narragansetts either, for that matter), so June will be an exciting month for me.

Congrats and good luck to you too! You should post pics of your quails when they hatch

Hopefully things will turn out ok and you'll end up with a better than expected hatch, Mypeeps.
I've had successful hatches with lower temps before (they just take a bit longer to incubate and so lock down is post-poned a couple of days), and I'd much rather have lower temps than to have them cook (which happened earlier this year).
Good luck!
