June Hatch-A-Long

I never use warm water and it all works out alright. Just get you a digital thermometer/hygrometer with the one you put outside and you put the thing in the incubator and it will give you an accurate reading. That's how I do it anyway.

I have a chick that just hatched and is still connected to the shell by the cord. It's dragging it around as it flops around. Just let it go?! I haven't opened the incubator because I have a couple ore that have pipped that I'm waiting on.

What do I do?

These eggs died? Any ideas why? The temp is a little unstable, like 99-102 but nothing extreme. The humidity is steady at 40%. I really hope more don't die.

It should come off in a bit of running around. If not, when you take it out, you can just clip it off.

There are so many variables that can happen. We just never really know why they quit early. Upsetting though when you see the movement, then all of a sudden they are gone the next time you candle. It could be genetic..mother nature knows. ??

Two eggs are definitely rocking! So cool!
Ever since I put them in lockdown yesterday morning my temps have been messed up. :( I realized too late that I didn't use warm water to fill my jars and sponges, but the more I think about it, I think my main thermometer/hygrometer isn't working correctly. All along I've used that one, along with the thermometer that came with the unit, and would sporadically put a meat thermometer into one of the vent holes to double check. All three always measured the same. Now my thermometer/hygrometer has been everywhere from 97-105 degrees over the past 24 hours. The other two have stayed the same, so I'm wondering if the high humidity has thrown off my other one? So I don't know how correct the humidity reading is either. :(

Having it around 97 is great for now. They are old enough they don't need a real steady heat, but you don't want to go real high now. I keep mine around 97 for lock down. And, if you are having to put that much water in, there must be something wrong with your reading. Be careful not to put too much in..one indication of too much water...condensation on the window. Unless these are duck or goose eggs..you do not want condensation on the window. No window? Well, go with the inbetween number on your hydrometer. And yes, the amount of heat will make the humidity change..higher temp? Lower humidity. Lower temp? Higher humidity.

A little late into the hatch-a-long, but I just ordered some serama eggs from BHep! They are due to arrive on Thursday, (so they'll probably wind up being born in early July.. Not sure if they belong in the June Hatch-A-Long

).

This is my first time incubating eggs! I just wanted a few chickens at first, so I ordered five chicks from mpc, but after two died and one is becoming more and more roo-like, I decided I wanted to add only a few more... so I went out and bought an expensive incubator and ordered a dozen (plus) eggs. Now that I have an incubator, I don't think it's going to stop there... (I'm already thinking, d'uccles, frizzle cochins, modern game) HELP

I heard seramas are little more difficult to hatch, so I'm a little glad that I'm starting with them because I don't need that many chickens! (at the same time I really want all of them to hatch out)

I'm going to try making chickens a "thing" with my friends hahah. They all think I'm a weirdo for picking pet chickens... (but they're so cuddly.. and they lay eggs... how could you NOT want a chicken??? In time they'll learn mwahaha)

So 4:33pm and I candled 1 egg this afternoon when I got home, I saw something in the egg but it wasn't moving at the time of the candling. Grrr. I hope that 1 will at least pip by tonight.
I baked cookies to try to get my mind off the eggs. Lol. That took oh 20-30 minutes. lol.

Eek I have 2 bators going. One in lockdown one on day 5 and our power goes out due to a horrid storm. I wrapped them in blankets and am keeping fingers crossed.
