June Hatch-A-Long

Congrats on your hatch...

Can I ask what method and what bator you used?
I think it's a still air hovobator. I hand turned 3x day and my hygrometer read about 35-40% humidity. I am not sure if it is accurate, though, but I kept an eye on the air sacs by candling about 3-4 times. That's about it!

24 hours after the first pip we have 8 chicks! 7 Silver Laced Wyandottes and 1 Ameracauna. Two more Wyandottes are on their way out, and 1 other Ameracauna has pipped. (15 other eggs not doing anything yet- can't even tell if they are moving with all the movement in the bator)
I am pleased that all of the many HOURS I spent reading the posts on this forum seem to be paying off! Thanks to everyone who has offered advice so far!
YAY!! Can't wait to see pictures!

We are on Day 6 (or 7?) and candled the eggs yesterday. I ended up having to throw out two bad eggs (that were rotten). See veining on a majority of the eggs..and was able to see an actual eye on another. It made me feel so much better about the process. Not going to candle for a few more days, again. But hopefully we will get at least one hatched (looks like a silkie egg, possibly).

So I just got off the phone with the farm and I thought they said if none hatch they give you eggs for free but it turned out that they let you keep the incubator for another cycle for free if you rented one of theirs. I have own Incubator. So I just got screwed.

It's day 10 for my guinea eggs and I recandled the 4 I had marked as clear on day 7. Two look like they are developing now and two were not doing a darned thing. So down to 13 guinea eggs and 8 chickens due on the 28th.
Just for giggles I candled the one sizzle I put in on Monday and it looks GREAT! I can't wait to meet that little one.

Good morning! I have had a chick that has been externally piped for 2 days. This morning it finally hatched but it is still attached to its egg. Seems strong (standing and chirping). Will it naturally break loose from the egg or is assistance needed? Thank you for any tips!!!

Give him a while to let it dry and fall off naturally. If after the cord has dried and shriveled up it is still holding on, snip through the dried part to separate them. Use scissors that have been sterilized or at least wiped down with rubbing alcohol and use a q-tip to place a dab of anti-bacterial ointment where you have snipped through. Later on, the rest of the cord should shrivel up and fall off on its own.

Two week old Jade is helping me read the Hatch-A-Long posts this morning. She also has some biting critique of my posts. I think I am going to have to bribe some good reviews out of her with some grapes.

That sucks!

So sorry to hear that.

Keep trying though.

I just read a great article on dry incubation I am going to try for next go around. I have 42 eggs in my other incubator right now and I'm not sure how they will do. So for the next set I am doing the dry thing. The article is by Bill Worrell, I found it here on BYC.
