June Hatch-A-Long

I am truly bummed this morning.

Yesterday I did a few eggtopsies to see why my eggs had not hatched. Several had stopped development awhile ago, a few weren't fertile. I did some more this morning on my silky eggs and the 3 that I did do were fully developed, they just did not hatch.

I must have done something wrong during lock-down. It's very sad to me. My first hatch I got 5 out of 7 silky babies and I did everything the same. Does anyone have any thoughts to what might have went wrong here. I have 42 more eggs, with 2 different hatch dates coming up and I don't want to kill them too. HELP!!!

So I just got off the phone with the farm and I thought they said if none hatch they give you eggs for free but it turned out that they let you keep the incubator for another cycle for free if you rented one of theirs. I have own Incubator. So I just got screwed.
I always incubate dry around 25-30% and then jack the humidity up to 55-60% when I lock down the eggs so I don't think that was the issue. Incubating at high temps can cause some weird development issues though so maybe the 104 degree day they were working on something important? I know that incubating too high causes chicks to be born with the curled toes thing. Which doesn't really. Bother the bird at all, just looks weird. I had a hatchery salmon faverolle with curled toes. Anyway I don't think the low beginning humidity was the issue though.

Went out to check my chick's before bed and decided to check in on the big girls as well. I heard one of my broodys almost purring? So I stopped to make sure she was ok. She got quiet when I got close and I hear chirping!!!! Didn't want to disturb her so I don't know if it's egg or baby. Either way it's a good sign! Today is day 20 for her. She's on 8 eggs. It's only day 7 for my other broody. So exciting! This is my first broody hatch!

Aww, your first? You will love this! She was purring at her babies. How cute is that? I loved watching my broody mamas. Haven't had one in a while.

Now wait..did you not rent an incubator? Did you tell them that? I wouldn't buy any more from them anyway. They didn't hatch!

Isn't there somewhere else close that has eggs..post on your state thread and ask if anyone lives close to you, or close enough to meet somewhere. We have that in our state. We have what we call the chicken train. Works great. I just got the prettiest white NN from up north..a 3 hr. drive for me, but met up with someone that got the chick that was taken closer to me because she was coming down this way, just not as far as me, so, met the gal that got the chick in a town only 20 mins. away. Do this every now and again. The gal that had the NN has bought from me a couple of times now.

I agree. I think the farm should have a policy where if you buy x amount of eggs that you should get another batch for free if they don't hatch. I did tell them it was my incubator. But if I had rented one for $200.00 I would have been able to keep it for another cycle if I bought eggs again. I did buy 2 dozen which sucks.

I too was thinking about posting something here on backyard chicken. I also looked on craigslist but nothing close was on there.

I am looking for eggs. I can hatch eggs but can't keep the chicken and looking to make a small profit.

I had bought eggs from that farm last year and the year prior and had hatches. So I don't know what went wrong. I am leaving the eggs in the incubator til tomorrow in case anything survived and is late but I doubt it. Poor babies.

I am not even gonna Crack one open cause its gonna be gross.

This is Survivor! She is the only chick that made it out of 19 eggs. She did have another chick with her, but it died

. I put her in with my week old silky's and they have taken to her great, she is a lot smaller and they get her in the middle of them to help keep her warm, it is so cute. I guess I will have to wait till next week for more.My Silky hen is sitting on 6 eggs right now. Keeping my fingres crossed all goes good there. Will keep you updated.
