June Hatch-A-Long

Oh how cute she'll be with her babies. I am so skeptical my hens would actually hatch out chicks (there's also no rooster).

So unrelated to June hatch along I guess but a neighbor just bought me this gift for no reason (I should give her some fresh eggs). How nice of her.

this hen hatched last year and did awful...possibly because it was 2 hens setting eggs side by side in the main coop. And I think some critter was stealing the eggs and eating the chick's as they hatched, but this hen and her sister each had 8 eggs, they managed to only hatch 2 chicks, and I only saw one of them for a few hours and then it disappeared too. But the lone chick did well and was sold along with this hens sister. So hopefully she will do better off by herself and not be eaten wherever she is setting.
As hatch time got closer next year I would go check and hear peeping, then find egg shells and no chicks for 2 days then finally the 2 chicks, then just the one. So I suspect fowl play...lol.. I quack myself up... OK enough poultry puns. Lol

Joining in!! Our first time with broody hens and incubating!!

hatch 1, broody silkie

A fellow byc member gave us a ten mixed eggs on May 13. We gave two eggs to our broody silkie hen at bedtime. Two days later we noticed she had moved her nesting spot and she wasn't on any of the eggs, just two golf balls. I searched through the straw and found one cold white egg sitting under straws, a few feet away from mom's new nest. I took away her golf balls and replaced them with two recently laid eggs from another nesting area and the cold forgotten egg. She's been happily sitting on them since. No idea what happened to that other white egg?! It is now day 21, keeping fingers crossed that the short time away from mama wasn't too detrimental.

Hatch 2, incubator at mom's house, start may 14 6pm

sister purchased an incubator from farm and fleet, set it up, ran a day, then added eight eggs from a fellow byc member (ty cindy!!) And four from our own flock.

candled a few times, removed three clears from our flock, and a blood ring from Cindy's. today was day 18 lock down. We removed the turner and placed eggs on a piece of paper towel. Temp at 99 & humidity around 50. Will try to raise humidity a bit more. See lots of dark mass and veins, and good size air sacs. Nervous last bit of waiting time!!!

Hatch 3, 24 eggs from a local byc member(ty Vicki!!!

Sister bought a Brinsea 20 and the turner. Bought 24 eggs Saturday the 17. incubator was set up and ready to be filled. Placed eggs. Start date 9pm May 17. Candled a couple times, removed three total, two clears and one early quitter. Today is day 14. Wednesday June 4 will be day 18 and lock down. Can see lots of veins, growth on these!!!

I'm very excited to see what our turnout is. This is our first time attempting to hatch on our own so it's pretty nervewracking!! I hope we get a nice bunch to hatch and join our silly flock.

Well update when anything happens!! :)

I just got home from work to find 6 more chicks hatched! I'm not even sure how many that makes.. I think somewhere around 20? It's so hard to count when they're moving around so much! I'm going to go check on the older chicks and the big chickens out in the coop, feed my horses, then I'll take and post some pictures of the newly hatched.
