The second is out and a 3rd is unzipping!!

I have two broody ducks. I think one is due to hatch this week and the other is due in three more weeks.

I couldn't wait, so I candled last night. A quick peek shows veins in 11/18 shipped and 6/6 of my eggs. I'm hoping to see more from the shipped when I do a proper candling on Saturday. But so far so good!

Today is Day 17 and I woke up to find that my first quail chick has hatched! It started pipping just before midnight last night. And there are several external pips, with some that are starting to zip! I'm so happy!

I first thought that those were filthy chicken eggs until I read and noticed that they were quail eggs!!

Oh and by the way: CONGRATS!!

Today is Day 17 and I woke up to find that my first quail chick has hatched! It started pipping just before midnight last night. And there are several external pips, with some that are starting to zip! I'm so happy!

I first thought that those were filthy chicken eggs

But you know, I've actually had chicken eggs almost that dirty and they still hatched. They were buried by one of the ducks...she had made her nest under the deck and would burying the eggs between lays. A chicken found the nest and contributed a few eggs to it and then when the duck went broody I was afraid to wash the eggs so just left them alone. They still managed to hatch out, dirt and all.

Fantastic OzarkCountryGirl ! Post another pic when they get fluffed up. Baby chicks are so cute, and i don't think i'v seen a quail chick before!

I'v got 5 out now, 2 more to go - one of them has pipped, not sure about the other but they both don't seem to be doing anything at the moment......I keep telling myself 'be patient!'

Thanks, @mrchicks . They are just so tiny, they look like baby song birds when they first hatch. I can't wait until they are all hatched out and fluffed up.
