June Hatch-A-Long

I have my fingers crossed for everyone in lockdown! One day closer over here, the wait is killing me. I shouldn't be in such a hurry, I have 13 little ones still in the brooder. They'll be 3 weeks on Saturday/Sunday. But I'm still hoping for a great hatch out of my remaining 16 eggs.

Two external pips! I don't think I am going to sleep tonight! This is my first incubator hatch!

They do look like blood rings. They almost look like a really thick vein that goes in a loop. Not always a perfectly circular one, but a loop just the same. Veins will span all over and not really connect in anything my hat could be called circular, but you can put the questionable eggs back and wait to see back later. A blood ring will become more obvious because any veins that were there Will disappear and you will be left looking at only the red loop. And then you can know for sure that you are seeing a blood ring. Out of my latest batch there was one of my eggs clear and one of the shipped eggs was clear and one shipped egg had a blood ring. I'm going to candle again here in just a few and see what I can see

Good luck to you three that just went into lock down. Now the wait, the dreaded wait. Good luck!

And are these 2 blood rings? I've never had any that look like this.

The top egg looks good! Actually, it's the second photo showed here, but the top of the ones on the bottom... Keep it for a couple of more days..the bottom one does look like a blood ring, I would toss that one..very clear..but a blood ring.

Yaay, photos of a Nankin baby!

I was just talking with a guy that has them. He wants to downsize his little flock. I hope he doesn't down size too much. Too many preditors around there, if he only keeps one roo ant three hens like he says, I worry that something may get them.

Omg! You guys are not going to believe my luck, or rather lack there of... now one of my faverolles hens looks like she is going broody. She is asleep in the nest box on 2 fake eggs and 1 real egg. Now 1 of my SF hens I assumed has been laying her eggs with my woods broody, because they lay totally different eggs the 2 SF I mean. One lays a cream colored torpedo shaped egg and the other lays a much darker almost totally round egg. One of those you have to candle to find out which end is which...anyway the round layer hasn't left any eggs in the coop for a week or better the torpedo girl has been leaving eggs about everyday... but now I don't know which is sitting on the torpedo egg in the nest box. Whether it is the round or pointy layer... The round would make sense because she will have been hanging out with the woods mama. And I don't care what anyone says one broody hen is like a cold among chickens. They see one doing it and they want to do it too... either way they are super messing up my plans...on a good note she might not be super determined to set because when I poked her to see if she was broody or just sleeping in the nest box she didn't growl or peck me..she just lifted up and shifted her eggs... Every other broody I've had will growl and peck me... so either she is holding to the SF personality and being sweet, or she isn't all that into it. Tomorrow will tell. If she is actually broody I might give her the eggs I've been saving this week for my next incubator run... or I might I don't know try to break her of it. I've never been able to make one stop setting if they're of a mind to though... ah well the best laid plans and all that.

I only have 2 right now 1 hen and one roo. They got introduced into my 9 week old flock. The babies are BIGGER than them! But Mr. Napkin is still the boss, he made sure of it. Sparred with a couple feisty pullets and now he is top bird lol. Kinda sucks that the bottom one is a blood ring. That's my only other Nakin egg. Praying the other one develops well and hatches!

Im also pretty sure I killed an egg tonight. Only one of my later shipped eggs had had a detached air cell, a really pretty marans egg. The other day it looked like it had something in it so I marked it with a check and a d for detached. Then tonight when I candled I couldn't see anything in it really so when I removed one with a blood ring I figured I would go ahead and take out the marans egg as well. I always crack them open to see what's going on in there and I believe the poor little marans was moving right along even though the air cell was like a carpenters level... sucks.
