ok and an oddball off the wall question maybe... would turkey poults be better off in a brooder or with a broody momma?

i've got 3 of the royal palms due next week, and i've got BOTH of my girls in the mille fleur pen trying to cram into 1 nest. LOL contemplated giving them the turkey and a few cochins that are due same time... i would give them a bigger nest before hand if i decide to do that, but wanted to get opinions...

oh and can the roo stay with them all since they're a 'family'?
I keep all my broodys in with the 'family' and they are really good about protecting the chicks. And from what I hear about turkeys chicks needing lots of care I would think the broody would be better able to show it what to do.

From my very limited experience with eggs, my favorite way of getting and shipping eggs is bubble wrapped with a fair bit of tape, in either a carton or a box, whit shredded paper. At least around the eggs. Balled paper or packing peanuts is fine on the top and bottom, but the shredded paper around the box seems to absorb the shakes and vibrations the best. I got a paper shredder because those are the only boxes I never got hairline cracks or leaking eggs out of. It seems like all that surface volume shares the shock better then anything else.

Woke up to two dead chocolate Orp chicks. One was buried in the straw with a broken neck. One looked like it was sleeping. The other was peeping in loneliness.

They were JUST FINE last night at 10pm, and there was no power outage and no sign that anything got into the brooder.

This week is just killing me!

I had a crushed quail chick this morning. I think its the one that tried to drown yesterday that I had to restate and put back in the incubator to warm up. They like to all sit it the little feed tray, guess I'm going to have to not put it in with so many chicks :(. its too popular.

I feel your pain Judges.

On a brighter note, m first broody hen sparkles looks like she abandoned her chicks last night. So I have a broody pen available for my new broody and this batch of pipping eggs! and one of my Oe's just hatched in the turning rack, on day 16. hes fine, peeping up a storm in the appropriate incubator now. that was an egg I couldn't send out because my hens hid it, I guess she put ti somewhere warm!

I am done free ranging, I have been noticing chickens missing almost daily I know its a risk when you free range, But I am down to 8 laying hens from 22 in just 2 weeks!! Plus 2 ducks missing. I am going to get some of that electric poultry netting so they can still kind of free range. I do have a big run already just fencing but with the electric netting I at least can move them to fresh grass/forage every couple of days.

Has anyone used this? Where is the best deal to get some and does it work? Any tips? Thanks
