Just an update on my bear...

Quote:
PA bears hibernate for just a short time but Im not sure when they start

The temp here dove to around 10 and was pretty windy for a few nights. I'm sure it won't be long before he dens up... if he makes it threw bear season.

Ever thought about the bear bangers? They make a god awful whistling then a really loud bang. They are shot out of what looks like a little flare gun. Bears have long memorys about areas to avoid and all these do is scare them.

I don't know. He doesn't spook that easy. He's been honked at with the car, shot with paintballs, whistled at, barked at, had rocks etc thrown at him... he doesn't seem phased by people or dogs at all. The only thing he isn't thrilled about is having the spotlight shined in his eyes. LOL

I hope he doesnt eat your birds, that would be awful

I like your blog btw - nice house - have to give me some tips on how to can, I have to learn how to do that yet.

The next step up would be a rubber bullet made especially for bears, they are shot out of a 12ga. and again, non lethal. A friend in Co. says that their gated community issues them to all of the residents through the homeowners association and they do work with the bears rarely coming back.

fyi, many (maybe most ?) bears in many areas don't hibernate all winter, they are up and about here and there. seen many a bear track in the snow.

I believe the problem lies within. In some states .....they say the deer , elk , antelope ,wolf , bear and populations are down . I ask this question......if most of the rural land is bought up , and then subdivided into 2-10 acre parcels , obviously these people would not want others coming onto their land to hunt , these said people who own the land feed the turkeys , deer , elk...etc. , where would these animals go ? Deeper into the forest...some or would they stick around knowing they can have food at their beck and call....be it grain , blocks , or garbage . So who is helping who ? We have currently had arguments with complete strangers who feel they can drive their trucks and park them next to our house so they can shoot the elk on another persons property . We had one guy argue with us saying since th power line ran through our property...it was public access....give me a break ! For one he would have to go through our property to get to the power lines....for another....that is access only for the power company and it's tree trimmers !

To get back on point..I'm not a tree hugger...but with so many people taking up prime habitat for cougars , bears , deer ,elk , etc....It's only to be expected they are going to stick around where food is easy !
